Suspect 'not in a position' to help in search for April Jones
THE MAN arrested for questioning about the disappearance of five-year-old April Jones near her home on Monday evening has told police he is “not in a position” to help with the search, which now covers 20 separate locations outside the Mid-Wales town of Machynlleth.
April’s distraught mother Coral Smith yesterday broke down in tears when she appeared before a police-organised press conference. “It’s been 36 hours since April was taken from us. There must be someone out there who knows where she is and can help the police find her,” she said.
Yesterday police officially named the local man arrested as Mark Bridger, and released a picture of him. They urged the public to come forward with any information about his movements on Monday. “If you did [see him], please don’t assume that somebody else has contacted us,” said Det Supt Reg Bevan.

Villagers shaken from 'quiet life' amid search for missing girl
Residents in the Welsh village where abduction suspect Mark Bridger lived for the last month believe missing April Jones has never been there.
Police forensic teams are continuing their minute examination of the farmhouse where Mr Bridger has lived since early September.
Expert searchers with long batons were slowly and methodically walking in the garden and land around the house prodding the ground.
Outside, officers stood guard at the entrance to the property but activity appeared to be continuing inside.
The village of Ceinws is home to about 80 mostly-retired residents who have come in search of a “quiet life”.

April Jones: Police launch murder inquiry after giving up hope of finding her alive
Police investigating the abduction of April Jones have launched a murder inquiry after giving up hope of finding her alive.
Det Supt Reg Bevan said they had arrested the main suspect Mark Bridger on suspicion of her murder.
Supt Ian John called on the hundreds of volunteers to stand down and leave to trained officers as the hunt moved away from a rescue mission to one of finding her body.
Police have already called in dogs trained to locate dead bodies.
Officers have until 5pm tonight to either charge Mr Bridger or let him go.
Locals said that the news was the "confirmation of their worst fears" as they reluctantly gave up the search.

April Jones: Family reveal she has been on fishing trip with murder suspect Mark Bridger
The missing girl April Jones went on a summer fishing trip with Mark Bridger – the man suspected of murdering her, it has been revealed.
April was taken crabbing with Mr Bridger's two children in his blue Land Rover which police believe was used to abduct the five-year-old, her family has revealed.
The crabbing trip in August means April had been in Mr Bridger's vehicle at least twice before she was abducted while playing outside her home.
Bridger was a frequent visitor to the Brynygog Estate in Machynlleth where April's family live close to his ex-girlfriend.
Two of his own children Sophie, nine, and Connor, 13, live in the street and their stepsister Erin, four, was one of April's best friends.
Relatives confirmed former lifeguard Bridger, 46, took Sophie and Connor crabbing – and asked April to join them.
