CAMDEN, N.J. -- Police continued their hunt on Monday for a masked man armed with a gun and machete who shot five young people in a parked car late Saturday night, killing two and seriously injuring three.

The killer drove the car a short distance with four of the victims inside, before abandoning it on a dirt road on the city's south side, police said.

The carnage was remarkable even for Camden, long one of the poorest and most violent cities in the country. The victims, all under age 21, were not involved in illegal activity, Camden Police Chief Scott Thomson said on Monday.

"This was not an act of gang violence. It was not a drug deal gone bad," Thomson said outside Camden City Hall. "It was a complete act of senselessness."

Thomson said investigators were still probing for the the motive of the slaying............

Those killed were identified as Jewel Manire, 18, and Khalil Gibson, 20. Two women, aged 20 and 16, remain in critical condition in a local hospital after being shot in the face and head. Another 16-year-old girl was shot in the arm and shoulder..............

The shooter was described as six foot tall Hispanic man, wearing yellow latex gloves and a black mask around the lower part of his face. He carried a gun and a machete, according to police.

Thomson said that detectives were pursuing several leads in their search for the shooter. "We're going to find him," he said.

The killer has not been identified at this time, but investigators believe the killer knew at least one of the victims. ......

The gunman then pushed the driver out of the seat and drove with the remaining victims to a dirt road off the 2500 block of Morgan Boulevard.

There, a 20-year-old female jumped from the vehicle and ran. The shooter chased her but she was able to escape and call 911. .......

The suspect was last seen running toward basketball courts on a field near Morgan Boulevard. .............

Jewel Manire was attending school to become a nurse. She loved to sing, model and design clothing and, earlier that day, had celebrated her son's 4th birthday. Her parents, Dyamond Manire and Demetrius Divine, learned from an autopsy that their daughter was pregnant when she was killed...

Manire, 36 and a behavioral health worker, and Divine, a 41-year-old entrepreneur, have spent an estimated $25,000. They have written letters to politicians from President Obama to the late U.S. Sen. Frank Lautenberg — not realizing he was deceased — and received a condolence letter from his office anyway.

They held several rallies and supplemented the reward money, which stands at $25,000. They convinced hip-hop artists from Philadelphia to New York City to create 40 music videos about their daughter to raise the profile of her case. They consulted family experts — Divine's brother is an FBI agent — and even a medium.
