Hercules investigators identified Southern California residents Darnell Washington, 25, and Tania Washington, 25, as suspects in the Oct. 5 killing of 55-year-old Susie Ko after reviewing evidence from Ko's stolen car and interviewing the pair over the past two days in Kings County, Wash., Detective Connie Van Putten said...............

A Southern California couple charged in the 2012 stabbing death of a Hercules woman pleaded not guilty at their arraignments.
Darnell and Tania Washington, represented by separate counsel, are charged with nine felony counts each, including murder in the death of retired schoolteacher Susie Ko. They were ordered to stand trial after a four-day preliminary hearing in July.
06-29-2016, 10:56 AM #3On the third floor of the A.F. Bray Courthouse Tuesday, prospective jurors were everywhere. (...)
But inside the adjacent courtroom, Department 13, the mood was much more tense. Defendant Darnell Washington, charged with murder, carjacking, burglary and robbery in the county's first death penalty case in years, is considered a high-escape risk. He reportedly broke out of a San Bernardino jail in 2012, going on a months-long crime spree, and tried to break out of the Martinez Detention Facility after he was arrested and charged with murder.
Jury selection on the case is in its third week, and prosecutors estimate that Washington's trial will begin in early July. He has been charged with the murder of Susie Ko, 55, a Hercules resident who was found dead inside her home in 2012. Washington's wife, Tania Washington, was charged in the case as well. She pleaded no contest to voluntary manslaughter and has been sentenced to 23 years.

Monday morning, after nearly four years -- interminable in one sense, yet not nearly enough time to heal a community that packed Rodeo's St. Patrick's Church for Susie Ko's funeral -- opening statements are expected to be heard in a Martinez courtroom in the murder trial of Darnell Washington, charged with Ko's murder.
08-11-2016, 02:53 PM #5A month before Hercules resident Susie Ko was found dead inside of her home, the apparent victim of a carjacking, a Southern California woman had an eerily similar interaction with Ko's alleged killers.
Darnell Washington, 28, is on trial facing capital murder charges in Ko's death. Prosecutors say that Washington, who had escaped from San Bernardino County Jail more than a month earlier, stabbed Ko 21 times on Oct. 5, 2012, while stealing her car to use as a getaway vehicle.
On Wednesday, a South El Monte woman took the stand and recounted her interaction with Darnell and Tania Washington, which occurred on Sept. 2, 2012, five days after Darnell Washington's escape from jail, and minutes after a shootout with police at a busy intersection.
09-27-2016, 01:31 AM #6The fate of a 28-year-old man accused of capital murder was handed over to 12 jurors Wednesday.
Attorneys in the case of Darnell Washington finished their closing arguments Wednesday afternoon, capping off a trial that has spanned nearly two months. Washington faces charges of murder, robbery, carjacking, burglary and a series of other crimes, and could be sentenced to death if convicted.
09-28-2016, 11:21 PM #7A jury late Wednesday convicted a Southern California man of murdering 55-year-old Susie Ko in her Hercules home, making him eligible for the death penalty.
Darnell Washington, 28, was convicted of first-degree murder and a slew of other charges and enhancements for the 2012 murder of Ko, who was beaten and stabbed with a knife and the barrel of a shotgun.
