...........Authorities said they used DNA evidence to identify Michael Sumpter as the man who raped and strangled 24-year-old Mary Lee McLain after breaking into the victim's Beacon Hill apartment in December 1973.

Sumpter, who died in prison in 2001, was also recently linked by DNA to the 1972 rape and murder of 23-year-old Ellen Rutchick in Boston.

"DNA has linked convicted rapist Michael Sumpter to the murder of Jane Britton, who was sexually assaulted and bludgeoned to death in her Cambridge apartment in January 1969.

Middlesex County District Attorney Marian Ryan said on Tuesday that the gruesome slaying is the third murder Sumpter has been linked to since his death at age 54.

Investigators said he also killed two other women in the Boston area in the 1970s."
Sumpter was also linked by DNA in 2012 to the sexual assault and killing of 24-year-old Mary Lee McClain in her Beacon Hill apartment.

Two years earlier, authorities said DNA suggested he was also responsible for the rape and slaying of 23-year-old Ellen Rutchick in the city's Back Bay neighbourhood.

DNA has also linked him to a rape in Boston in 1985, prosecutors said.
