A Winnsboro woman who was attacked and set afire on Sunday has sustained burns over 60-percent of her body, her family says.

Sharmeka Moffitt, 20, remains in critical condition and is expected to undergo surgery Tuesday. A biopsy also is planned in addition to the surgery, said Moffitt’s mother, Edna Moffitt.

Her vehicle was painted with a racial slur and the letters “KKK,” her family said. Moffitt, who called 911 to report the attack, was unable to indentify the persons responsible.

The FBI is investigating whether the attack was a hate crime, Winnsboro Police Chief Kevin Cobb said. The investigation is a collaboration between several law enforcement agencies including Winnsboro Police Department and Franklin Parish sheriff's office.

I can attest to that. In college, I attended a political event. We carried on conversation with men who later presented themselves as members of the KKK, even having business cards!!! It is the only time I have ever seen evidence of existence so clearly, so I know it exist but very secretive for the most part.

Was this KKK or strictly a few individuals acting the part??? I don't know that it matters, the hate is the same.

I was coming here to say Louisiana State Police found her fingerprints on lighter fluid and a lighter. Wow is all I can say. I truly hope this young lady gets help.
 
The only thing that surprises me is how many people fall for it each time.
But most of these type of stories turn out to be hoaxes.

Sadly it was some hate in her that she did this to herself. She needs psychological help. Such a pretty, young girl with promise. I pray she is not suffering too much.

There's alot of Chapters of the KKK that are not hidden and have nothing to hide in their opinions so that Chisley guy has that wrong.

omg... i guess im shocked that this woman really thought that she could pull this off and the attention would be worth the pain of setting herself on fire? wth?

Wasn't too long ago a woman claimed three men attacked her because she was a lesbian - trashed her house, painted slurs on the wall, carved slur in her torso. All a lie. Anyone who does this -- makes up a story of a hate crime should be jailed.
 
By the by we just had a neighbor not only set himself on fire, but it caused the house to catch fire. Not a hate crime. Domestic violence. Mad at the wife so ya set yourself on fire. I guess that showed her.

What causes that? There's so many other ways to hurt yoursel weather fake or not.:waitasec:

Sharmeka Moffitt has pleaded guilty to setting herself on fire and was sentenced to pay $1000 in fines, $500 court costs and fees and has 4 years of probation. She was sentenced to 5 years each for both charges that she pled guilty to but those sentences were suspended.

Sad that she did this, then lied and blamed 3 men in white hoodies for setting her on fire and writing racial slurs on her car. (she wrote "KKK" and the "n" word). Two very inflammatory words, in my opinion.

Disgusted that she made up such horrific lies and deliberately did such a thing that was clearly intended to create racial tension. It did indeed cause a lot of tension and hostility from blacks who were outraged at the thought that such evil people would do such a thing to a woman, apparently for being black.

I hate that her acts have caused such issues and reignited racial tension. What a horribly disturbed individual she is to do such a thing. I pray she gets psychological help and perhaps one day speaks out on why she would do such a thing.

I wonder what kind of mental illness this is? I wonder if it's similar to munchausen's ...

They are not hidden and most of the groups have websites, most states have at least 2 different groups.

Thing is back in the day all KKK members and groups fell under the national organization that had 8+ million members, in the 60's the national group lost it's copyright on the name (or whatever you call that) so now ANY group can call themselves the KKK and they no longer all abide by the same exact rules.

As such the different groups have slightly different rules and membership requirements, some dislike radical national socialists, others have no problem with them, some restrict membership to Christian Protestants etc... Their official names vary slightly to reflect the individual doctrines of that specific KKK association.
 
I'm not sure what fines and even a suspended sentence are going to do in a case like this. It seems to me one would have to be mentally ill to go though with the act of lighting oneself on fire as a hoax (I am leaving out examples of people who do so in protest, as I think that's a completely different thing and not related to mental illness). I wonder if she was suffering paranoia, or delusions, and believed herself to be under threat, or persecuted or something? :confused:

In cases where the sole victim is the perpetrator themselves, I'd much rather see a court ordered psych exam and treatment. If she has some type of illness, all the fines in the world aren't going to solve the problem.
