Has been solved.

It’s still unclear how part of grave marker ended up in a Council Bluffs recycling bin, but authorities do not believe it was stolen from a gravesite.

Council Bluffs Police Capt. Terry LeMaster said employees at the Council Bluffs Recycling Center found a plaque in a recycling bin last week. The plaque appeared to be part of a grave marker belonging to Megan Alaine Kjellberg, a 6-month-old child who died a day after New Year’s Day in 1986.

LeMaster feared someone had stolen the marker in an attempt to sell it for scrap metal. The appearance of the plaque could lead one to believe that it was solid copper. LeMaster postulated that when the would-be thief realized it was not solid copper, and therefore not worth risking cashing it in, they had a change of heart and put it in a recycling bin to ensure it would once again find its way back to the cemetery.

Going on his hypothesis, LeMaster checked with Council Bluffs cemeteries and funeral directors in an attempt to find the final resting place of Megan Kjellberg, but the search yielded no results
