UT - Fritz Helland - 80 years - Millcreek - 24 Oct 2012
Despite nearly 1,000 volunteers joining the search Sunday, 80-year-old Fritz B. Helland remains missing.
"Although we're very excited with the turnout and pleased with the effort, again we're just having no success, which is extremely concerning," Salt Lake County Sheriff Jim Winder said. "We're coming up on four days. We're just hopeful we can bring this to a conclusion."
The Millcreek man was last in contact with his family Wednesday, by cell phone during a walk with his dog, a miniature Doberman pinscher.
He reportedly has problems with his short-term memory.
Loren Lybbert was among those who volunteered Sunday, talking to area residents about what they might have seen and asking for permission to search their backyards for any sign of the missing man.
I have family there... and the cops have been banging on doors and requesting to search backyards.
They have cops all over, cars, trucks, bikes... they are everywhere.
Right now they are searching up by Mt Olympus... which is a couple miles south east from the original search area.
We have gotten a little bit of snow in the last few days. It has certainly been cold... but not freezing most of the time.
I have seen nothing to indicate that they found the dog, it appears to still be missing.

He's been missing since WEDNESDAY and they just started looking Friday? Is that correct? Yikes - he could be anywhere. And what about the dog? Still no sign of the dog?
Who reported him missing?
Cell phone pings?
Talk about no information that would help people find this guy. A tan jacket - that's it.

snipped...Fritz Helland's family went to visit him Friday at noon at his Canyon Rim township home, but he and his dog were gone.
The family has tried his cell phone, but received no responses.

A few weeks ago a neighbor of ours went missing in a neighboring area. He had heart issues and was without his medication.
He would pass out without his medication and then eventually die. There was time to find him though.
His phone was ringing, so it was not dead. Everyone was frantic trying to find him.
The family was out searching and begging LE to ping his cell phone. They kept stalling or refusing to do it.
4 days later, a neighbor out searching found his car with him recently dead in it.
If they had pinged his phone on day one, he would have been found alive.
I wouldn't be surprised if the phone in this case is turned off, not with him, dead, or if they haven't pinged it.
I also wouldn't be surprised if this guy simply fell in an area that he isn't easily seen from... and would have been okay if found quickly.
I don't see how he can be alive but still missing if he's in the area they are searching in.

Officials announced about 7 p.m. Sunday that the effort to locate Helland would transition into a new phase, ending the call for volunteers to respond to organized searches.
Police are asking residents to search around their own homes, sheds, trailers and yards for any sign of Helland.
When they started searching they were at:
3370 South 3100 East
Today they searched at least as far as:
4500 South 3800 E
I'm not sure why they went that far?
If they had reason to think he walked that far?
If he normally did?
From where they searched today to where they searched before it's at least a 10 minute drive.
Would he walk that far?
That isn't a short walk... and you are talking about some major roads to deal with.
MillCREEEK is called that for a reason. I do hope they checked the water.

Praying for Fritz and his dog to be found soon.
His family must be frantic!
