WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A magnitude 7.7 earthquake hit Canada's Pacific coast province of British Columbia on Saturday night, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

The quake was centered 123 miles south-southwest of Prince Rupert at a depth of 6.2 miles, the USGS said.

This isn't going to be good. We have Hurricane Sandy heading up the coast, why am I worried tsunamis are going to get mixed in with hurricanes? They already said it was the "perfect storm as is" Oh right BC schwooo! Saw Canada and said OH NOOOO!

A tsunami Warning is now in effect which includes the coastal areas of British Columbia and Alaska from the north tip of Vancouver Island, British Columbia to Cape Decision, Alaska (85 miles SE of Sitka). - Event details: Preliminary magnitude 7.1 (Mwp) earthquake / Lat: 52.863, Lon: -131.942 at 2012-10-28T03:04:11Z Tsunami warnings mean that a tsunami with significant widespread inundation is expected, or occurring. Warnings indicate that widespread dangerous coastal flooding accompanied by powerful currents is possible and may continue for several hours after the initial wave arrival.

I've heard about it three times already (via email from friends)...apparently there are tsunami's expected down here...

WFG, is that right? That we in Southern California should be prepared for a possible tsunami? I'm thinking of all those restaurants and clubs down on the coast who, on a Saturday night, will be rockin'.

Sigh. I don't like this weekend...

It's tough to say. Everyone is scrambling. Probably not though, at least not severe. I do note that Santa Barbara, La Jolla, San Pedro, and Crescent City are on the charts for some sort of action (see "time expected" above @ #6).

So far the Canadian tsunami warning is marked as "information only" for Alaska, Washington, Oregon, and California. So no tsunami warning is in effect for those areas at the present time.

Late Saturday Natural Resources Canada issued a statement: “A major earthquake occurred in the Haida Gwaii region (formerly known as the Queen Charlottoe Islands). It was felt across much of north-central B.C., including Haida Gwaii, Prince Rupert, Quesnel and Houston. There have been no reports of damage at this time.”

The epicentre was reportedly about 40 kilometres south of Sandspit, B.C. at a depth of 19 kilometres in the coastal waters.

There's no such thing as a safe harbor during tidal surges. They are safer out at sea. The only vessels that survived the 2011 "tsunami" in our area are the ones that made it out to sea first.
