UK - Pierre Barnes, 12, French Island, 27 Oct 2012

Searches continued tonight for a 12-year-old British boy who disappeared during a bicycle ride in high winds on a tiny French Mediterranean island.

Special tracker dogs, launches, divers and a helicopter joined the search for Pierre Barnes, from Grantham in Lincolnshire, whose bicycle and a shoe were found on Sunday beside a coastal creek on the island of Porquerolles, near Toulon.

Pierre vanished during a bicycle ride in story conditions on Saturday. He had arrived a few hours earlier for a mid-term break with his British father, French mother and his brother and sister.

Investigators said they had ruled out abduction, as there were no boats leaving Porquerolles when Pierre disappeared.

Search teams will now focus on crevices and caves where Pierre might have sought shelter from strong winds, as well as ponds and pools he could have fallen into.

Senior police official Nathalie Bakhache said the whole of the Mediterranean island, located close to Toulon, would be covered with search dogs.

She added search specialists from mainland France had also joined the hunt, alongside people who live on the island.

"People here are linked with a strong solidarity, so on their own they decided to help the family search for the boy," she said.

"We are going on with all the means we can gather to find this boy."

    This happened Saturday?
    How big is this island?
Finding his bicycle and only one shoe doesn't sound good.
I hope he is found soon.

stephen Barnes, a 57 year-old director of a property company, today told of his hope that his youngest son had survived the storm.

“I am certain he went off on an adventure on his bicycle but in the forest all the little tracks look the same,” he told French television.

“He is lost but he is a strong boy and I hope he found a place to sleep where there was not too much wind.

Any body heard if he has any special needs? Maybe this just isn't a good picture, but his eyes in this one remind me of Down's Syndrome.

So his bicycle was found damaged (chain derailed)? Hopefully he decided to take shelter in one of the caves to ride out the storm. Poor kid!

I'm a bit confused. From what I've read, the family arrived at this island and within just a few hours, whilst the weather was stormy, the parents were happy to let the 12 old to go off alone on his bike? Or is that just inaccurate reporting by the press?

Does anyone know if he was familiar with the island before, or was this their first visit?

I'm not accusing anyone at all - it just seems strange to me. If I'm on holiday with my children (around this age), I check out the area before they are allowed off without me - and even then its with their brothers, not alone.

Hoping he is found safe and sound, hiding somewhere, perhaps disorientated, but sadly it seems unlikely after all of this time.

"He would have been very frightened, he would have panicked - as you know he dropped a shoe and didn't bother to collect it, but he's a strong little boy, tough, and I don't think he would have given up lightly," said Mr Barnes.

"He would have walked and walked and walked until eventually he was so tired that he would have found somewhere out of the wind. I'm certain his body is there."

    So soon?

The child went missing on Saturday and by Tuesday the father is perfectly content with accepting the he is lost for good? Something sounds fishy.

You mean like going on holiday to an area that doesn't have a very sophisticated police force, then losing one of your children type fishy?

Ok this is getting weird fast. I have never heard of parents losing hope after 2-3 days. ESPECIALLY with an older child who has more means of survival.

The search has now been completely called off!

    Quite extraordinary.

Pierre's father Stephen said: "Pierre is dead but I hope we find his body, then we can bury him. But I'm afraid that even that might not be possible."
Paul Mourier, the prefect of the Var region, said: "Everything has been done, we have scoured the island on all sides. We have been let down."

Nathalie Bakhache, a senior police officer investigating Pierre's disappearance, said he "may have had an accident" or a "bad encounter".

Whilst in Wales, there are parents still clinging to hope that their daughter who disappeared 4 weeks ago is alive, despite someone being charged with her murder....

    This is such a shame
    Such a sweet little man

The father seems unusual, perhaps its shock
He comes across as cold , but I suppose it could be grief or fear

I think I need to start reading again from post 1... I must have missed something.

Why is the father so sure he's dead? Why does he insist it's unlikely that he will be found?

    This is very strange.
