Dallas star Larry Hagman dies aged 81 after battle with cancer

Dallas star Larry Hagman has died at the age of 81.
The actor, who was famed for playing J.R. Ewing on the hit show, died at a Dallas hospital on Friday after complications with his recent battle with throat cancer.

He returned to Dallas to reprise his role as cunning villain J.R. in the show's reboot, which started airing in June of this year.

We all hated him, but loved him so much. A bullet couldn't stop him, but cancer did. RIP JR.

Not long ago, I watched (again!) The Group (1966, based on the novel by Mary McCarthy) on TCM. The film features a superb cast that includes a very young, handsome Larry Hagman. If you've never seen Hagman in his younger days as a film star, the movie shows up periodically on TCM and is worthwhile viewing.

My heart broke a little when I heard this...I was in my early 20's and single during the original Dallas series and STAYED HOME on Friday nights just to watch (no tivo back then, lol). Also loving the new series...We have a thread in the basement:

I adored Larry as a kid as Major Tony Nelson .. He rocked.

He was great in Dallas too.

He will always be loved and missed.

Larry Hagman seemed like a great guy! I've read many articles that state he was well-liked by his peers. I enjoyed both his roles as Major Tony Nelson and JR Ewing.

My prayers go up for his family and friends during this time of loss. :praying:

Hollywood is reacting with sadness and fond memories in the wake of the news that Larry Hagman has died. Hagman, 81, died in a Dallas hospital Friday afternoon stemming from a long battle with cancer, according to numerous stories that broke on Saturday morning.

Hagman was best known for playing one of the most memorable characters in the history of television — the villainous, scheming J.R. Ewing in the original “Dallas.”

Before that, he starred with Barbara Eden in “I Dream of Jeannie,” one of the best-remembered sitcoms of the 1960s. He was seen in memorable movies too, including “Fail Safe” with Henry Fonda (1964), and “Harry and Tonto” with Oscar-winner Art Carney (1974)...

I Dream of Jeannie was one of my favorite shows, I always thought he was a handsome man. He did have a "quirk" if you will, he choose a day of the week to not speak. RIP
 
RIP Larry Hagman. I've kind of been waiting to hear about this for a couple of years. He recently had, with much reluctance, to put his wife in a home because her Alzeheimers was getting so bad he simply could not care for her at home anymore. I think her memory is pretty shot so in a way it's kind of a blessing for her.
