Mother insists missing teen is not a runaway

Thirteen year old Dylan Redwine isn’t a runaway, his mother Elaine Redwine insisted late Friday afternoon, Nov. 23.
She said Dylan’s father Mark Redwine said he last saw his son at around 7:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 19, noticed he wasn’t around at around 11 a.m., and reported him missing at around 4:30 p.m. that day. Mark Redwine lives at the north end of County Road 500 at Vallecito.
“I don’t believe he ran away,” Elaine Redwine said, and he isn’t evading people searching for him. “He isn’t just out there roaming the area. I believe he is being held (against his will) or is unable to contact us.”

Investigators have few clues in missing boy case
A week after a 13-year-old teen vanished near his father’s home, investigators tell FOX31 Denver they have no new information on the teen’s whereabouts or any suspects in his disappearance.

Dylan Redwine, who was last seen on November 19, has been the focus of a massive and extensive search by the La Plata County Sheriffs Office and the FBI for over a week. The teen, who splits time between his divorced parents, was last seen at his father’s house near Vallecito Lake in Southwest Colorado.

“We haven’t identified anyone as a suspect at this point but the investigation is looking at a possible abduction or the possibility of a runaway,” said spokesperson Dan Bender of the La Plata County Sheriffs Office.

He said he didn’t have a lot of support at the moment and had family coming in to help him figure out how to respond to the situation. Mark Redwine said he expected his brother to arrive Tuesday night in Vallecito.
In response to questions about Elaine Redwine’s recent comments intimating that her ex-husband might be involved in Dylan’s disappearance, Mark Redwine said, “I don’t want to lash out at my ex-wife.”
Mark Redwine reported his son missing the afternoon of Nov. 19. He told police he saw his son about 7:30 a.m. as he left to run errands. The boy was gone when he returned about 11:30 a.m., he said.

-At the request of the dive team, two boats equipped with sonar will survey the area Monday.
-Members of La Plata Search and Rescue will also continue to search portions of the shoreline that is several miles in length.
-About 30 members of the ad hoc group who met on the Find Missing Dylan Redwine Facebook page searched in the areas of Forest Lakes, County Road 502 and County Road 501 from Bayfield to Vallecito.

=Mark Redwine said Sunday that he hadn't been able to find the boy's fishing rod. "I question why it has taken this long to start scouring the lake because from Day One they have known it is likely he had a fishing pole with him," Redwine, 52, said.
-Information he received from the boy's friends suggests that Dylan was hitchhiking when he disappeared, Redwine said. "It sounds to me like he's not even in the area," he said.
-He said he is concerned that a stranger could have picked up the teen and abducted him.
-Mark Redwine said his son is the type of kid who would go into the wild to fish or hike.
-"I would describe him as being an athletic type of kid who loves being outdoors," he said.

-The mother of 13-year-old boy Dylan Redwine, fears that the dad may have done something to "remove Dylan from the situation."
-"I was married to Mark for a lot of years, and I know the way he reacts to things," "If Dylan maybe did or said something that wasn't what Mark wanted to hear, I'm just afraid of how Mark would have reacted."
-Elaine Redwine told ABC News she believes her ex-husband was upset that she was the court-mandated primary custodian of their son.
-"I don't think Mark treats him very well," "I would not put it past Mark to have done something to remove Dylan from the situation. You know, like 'if I can't have him, nobody will.'"
- "He (Mark) hasn't had any contact with us. [My older son] tried to get a hold of him by texting him, and he wouldn't respond," she said. "I just find it odd that at a time like this, he would be so evasive."
-Hundreds of people have turned up to help search for Dylan, but so far police say they are no closer to finding him. "We had people in the air, on horseback, on ATVs, search dogs, and we got no clues from any of that," Bender said.

-“I’m running out of prayers,” Elaine Redwine said as she watched a law-enforcement boat equipped with sonar trace patterns on the reservoir near the dam. “The longer this goes on, the more helpless we feel.”
-Contacted Monday at his home, Mark Redwine declined to discuss the search for Dylan. “I know they’re looking for my son, but I’d prefer not to say anything,” Redwine said at the door of his house. “I prefer to let the investigators do their work.”
-La Plata County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Dan Bender said the sonar boats make runs parallel to the dam and then perpendicular to the structure in order to leave no area unscrutinized. One sonar boat belongs to the New Mexico State Police, another is the personal boat of La Plata County Sheriff’s Deputy Jerry Little.
-None of Dylan’s belongings that could carry his scent was available in the first days of the investigation. But the family had articles of the boy’s clothing delivered on the weekend. “We have the clothes,” Bender said Monday. “We don’t need them here (at the reservoir), but can use them later.”

-The New Mexico State Police Search and Recovery Dive Team called off its search for Dylan Redwine in Vallecito Reservoir on Monday night, said Lt. Jennie Pierce, the commander of the dive team.
-The dive team spent two days searching the area and is confident the dogs were wrong, Pierce said. "We had a specific area we were asked to search," she said. "At this time, we feel that he's not there."
-The team searched the south end of the reservoir on Sunday and didn't find any clues about Dylan's whereabouts, Bender said. On Monday, six members of the scuba-diving team boarded New Mexico State Police boats equipped with sonar and crisscrossed the lake, Bender said. The divers went as deep as 40 feet below the surface, where visibility was about seven or eight feet, Bender said.
-Other search and rescue members and volunteers searched the lake's 12-mile shoreline and surrounding areas Monday in hope of finding Dylan alive.

Link
-Members of La Plata County Search & Rescue team using bloodhounds searched for the teen Monday night and Tuesday. The search area included the shoreline around Vallecito Lake, several small subdivisions, county roads, steep wooded hillsides and hiking trails. Many of the homes in the area are seasonal while some are occupied year around.
-The search-and-rescue team is on standby Wednesday in case new leads are developed that could direct them to new search areas. Investigators are also retracing Dylan’s route from Colorado Springs to Durango and places he may have visited after his arrival.

-Elaine Redwine also questions why the boy's father, Mark Redwine, had no clothing to offer search teams and K-9 units.
-Other family members have hinted that Mark could be violent
-7News reached out to Mark Redwine he said those comments simply aren’t right.

-Mark, was the last to see him at 7:30 a.m. on Nov. 19. They were near a local reservoir, but police insist he is not a suspect.
-“He was just 13, learning so many things,” she (Elaine) said in an interview with the Durango Herald. “He had just moved into an environment which he really loved.”
-Dylan’s mom, in an interview with Good Morning America, claimed her ex-husband is irresponsible. Mark tells us it’s not true, but says it’s not worth talking about on camera.
-Mark says he left Dylan while he went to run some errands, and that he was gone when he returned. Police say Mark has been extremely cooperative, allowing a search of his home, among other things.

-When approached at his home in Vallecito, Mark Redwine answered the door clutching a pillow. He declined to be interviewed, saying he had been “bombarded” by media requests. He said he didn’t have a lot of support at the moment and had family coming in to help him figure out how to respond to the situation.
-Elaine Redwine was director of financial aid at Fort Lewis College when she left for Colorado Springs this summer. She works in the same field now at Colorado College.
-Mark Redwine worked at United Pipeline Systems in April 2010 when a kitchen fire caused heavy damage to his house.

Link
-"I can't believe you can be married to someone for 20 years and they could say those kinds of things about you," Mark Redwine told KRDO Newschannel 13.
-Mark didn't want to go on camera, and said he has avoided the media thus far because he doesn't want to interfere with the search for his son or say anything negative about his ex, with whom he said he had a messy divorce.
He said his son, "means everything to me." "I'm just trying to let the authorities do their job," he said. "My only concern right now is Dylan
-A poster with Dylan's picture is on Redwine's door, and a little boy's blue bicycle sits next to his home.
-Investigators with the La Plata County Sheriff's Office could be seen driving past the house and told KRDO Newschannel 13 they were going door-to-door talking to neighbors.

-Candles shone in the darkness as more than 150 people turned out for a vigil for missing 13-year-old Dylan Redwine on Tuesday evening at Eagle Park in Bayfield.
-The ceremony marked the first public appearance by Dylan’s father, Mark Redwine … who said he arrived late because he didn’t know about the vigil.
-Like many who spoke, he referred to Dylan in both the present tense and the past tense, reflecting the uncertainty everyone feels about Dylan’s fate.
“That boy was my whole world,” he told the crowd. “I would do anything to find him. You don’t know how much I love that boy.” “Unfortunately, his mother and I don’t see eye to eye,” he said. “I wish it could be different, because at a time like this, we should be together.”
-A picture of a boy who was the class clown also emerged with tales of Dylan loving unicorns and teasing friends.

-Tuesday at 1:30 p.m., from the La Plata County Sheriff's Office:
-The Dylan Redwine Task Force is continuing their door-to-door canvasing of the Vallecito Lake area that they began on Nov. 27
-Using these maps, investigators are able to be sure that they check every building in the Vallecito area. There are over 20 investigators and officers from multiple departments conducting a thorough search of the area around Vallecito Lake.
-Three La Plata County Search and Rescue air-scent canines have returned to the Vallecito area to do ground searches. Articles with Dylan’s scent on them have been provided by Dylan’s mother (brought from Colorado Springs)
-“Investigators are no longer looking at the possibility of Dylan being a run-away, but we still view this as a search and not a recovery effort,” said Dan Bender.
-A few days ago, there was a part of a fishing pole found on the Vallecito dam and investigators have determined that it has no connection with Dylan. The owner of that broken fishing pole has been contacted and the fishing pole has been ruled out as a potential clue.
-The Task Force is asking the general public if they have any recreational video footage that includes vehicles traveling on main routes between Durango and Vallecito Lake, taken between 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 18 through noon on Monday November 19.

Link
-"Just given the length of time (he's been gone), we're looking at other possibilities," said Durango Police Lt. Ray Shupe. "Everything from abduction to homicide."
-The Durango La Plata Crime Stoppers also has a cash reward for information leading to Dylan. Crime Stoppers can be reached at 970-247-1112.

Link
-Investigators had considered all options, including that Dylan was a runaway. On Wednesday, however, they ruled that out.
-Factors that led to that conclusion include the absence of activity by Dylan on social media, lack of text messages to his friends and the passage of time, authorities said. “He was very socially active. He had friends he texted all of the time. A typical runaway contacts his buddies and there’s been none of that,” Bender said

Link
-“There’s a combination of factors,” Bender said. “There’s been the passage of time without any sightings; Dylan was not a visitor but had friends here; he has a history of staying in contact with his family and friends; and there’s been nothing on his cellphone record since he was reported missing
-Specifically, investigators would like to talk to anyone who was taking photos or shooting videos that show vehicles along the typical routes between Vallecito and Durango from 6 p.m. Nov. 18 to noon Nov. 19. That would include County Road 501 and Florida Road (County Road 240).
-Three canine units belonging to La Plata Search and Rescue returned Wednesday to Vallecito to explore areas adjacent to the reservoir but not along the shore, Bender said.
-He said a million things were running through his head about what could have happened to his son. He said he doesn’t think Dylan ran away. He has nothing and no one to run away from, Mark Redwine said. He said he will continue to stay in his house, saying he thought that was what would be best for Dylan.
-Mark Redwine said Dylan had made tentative plans to meet friends at 6:30 a.m. Monday morning, but “nothing was etched in stone.” Bender said Dylan didn’t contact the friends then. Mark Redwine said he had questioned why the 13-year-old would want to wake up that early in the morning.
-Mark Redwine said he was going to give Dylan a ride to his friends’ house and tried to wake him up when he left Monday morning but said Dylan was “out like a light.” The father said he had to go to Durango that morning to run errands and speak to his divorce lawyer.

Link
-"I want to give thanks for the time that we have together, and -- but it's very difficult to be thankful right now," (Elaine) Redwine said.
-The distraught mother said her son's cellphone records show the last time he used it was Sunday night at 8 p.m., and that alone is uncharacteristic.

Link
-“If he could call, he would.” His cell phone and charger and various other items were in his backpack, which he supposedly had with him. It’s not at his father’s house, she (mother) said.
-She said she and Dylan had moved from near Bayfield to Colorado Springs on July 1 this year.
-She said she was awarded sole custody of Dylan on Sept. 21. Previously she and Mark Redwine had shared custody. On Nov. 18, Dylan flew here for his first visit with his father since that court decision, Elaine said.
