NC - Rocky Mount, Skeletal remains in woods, Feb'05

    Saturday, February 05, 2005

Two children practicing "Manhunt" team hide-and-seek around 3 p.m. Saturday found more than they expected in the woods the skull and a few bones of a decomposing body.

"We were walking through the woods, looking for a new spot to hide," said Adam Blake, 14, of Rocky Mount. "We saw something round, and we thought it was a ball."

Adam and his 12-year-old friend Matt King of Tarboro found a skull missing its teeth and lower jaw bone, along with a few other bones, Adam said.

Too little of the body was left to tell who it is just by looking, said Matt, a student at Martin Middle School in Tarboro.

"We're not sure if it was a girl or a guy," Matt said. The two had been watching scary movies earlier in the day and grew afraid, he said. "At first, we just stopped, like we couldn't move. ... I was shaken up. It was a weird feeling."

The decomposed skeletal remains lay covered in leaves in a ditch near an irrigation pond about 150 yards behind the Shell gas station on Benvenue Road. The wooded depression sheltering the remains sits next to a residential cul-de-sac of dirt roads, mobile homes and cats.

"I was freaking out because ... we didn't know if someone was going to jump out," Adam said.

The two boys ran back to Adam's home at Bridgewood Apartments and called the police. When the two returned to the scene with police, they noticed some clothes black jeans and what resembled nylon-webbed combat boots, Blake said. A shoelace dangled from a tree limb above the skull, he added.

Police told them that it looked like a girl's skull, Matt said. Duty officers from the Rocky Mount Police Department would not confirm that.

"It looked like the vast majority of the skeleton," said Rocky Mount Police Lt. J. Wayne Sears.

Rocky Mount police removed the remains, the Rocky Mount Police Department stated in a press release. A medical examiner will conduct a forensic examination Monday morning, to attempt to identify the body and the cause of death.

Neighbors said the police told them they would return Monday to ask questions.

So was it a man or woman? Murder or accident? Please don't leave us hanging now that you have our attention.

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. -- Authorities on Monday identified a badly decomposed body found over the weekend, but they weren't releasing more information pending notification or relatives.

Children found the human remains in the woods near the 1800 block of Benvenue Road on Saturday.

An autopsy was performed over the weekend, but details on the cause of death haven't been released.

Thanks, ShowerSinger, for all your research.
If dentals are readily available, the ID can be very fast. Even DNA matches can be, if the funding is there.

Indeed, prayers for all families awaiting an answer.

    Blessings, Lanie
