Israel Keyes, accused in the kidnapping and killing of 18-year-old Samantha Koenig, is dead in an apparent suicide and is suspected in at least seven other deaths outside Alaska, authorities said Sunday.

We believe there are four victims in Washington state," one in New York state, and a couple from Essex, Vt.

Authorities said Sunday that Keyes had confessed to the kidnapping and murder of the Vermont couple, Bill and Lorraine Currier, who disappeared in June 2011. Their bodies have not been recovered.

Rook said authorities do not know the names of the suspected additional victims in New York and Washington.

Possible clues on area and time frame for potential victims to look at. (Of course, LE said Keyes traveled a LOT, so do not limit it to these specific areas!)

At the press conference authorities said Keyes also admitted to killing Bill and Lorraine Currier of Vermont, who went missing in June 2011 and whose bodies have never been found. Keyes also led investigators to believe he had killed four people in Washington State and one in New York State. Keyes statements led authorities to believe his victims spanned a broad range of ages, and he'd committed the crimes over a ten-year-plus period of time. They said he expressed no remorse about his crimes, but had been cooperating with investigators, who last talked to him on Thursday.
 
Important to note a few things revealed at the pressor today:


  • "Keyes did not have a particular type of victim. It was more about the circumstance which presented itself".

  • Keyes traveled extensively. LE said he boarded a plane and rented a car. In other words, victims are probably not limited to where he lived and worked. But also the areas he traveled to.

The four victims he told them about in WA state are unnamed, as is the one in NY state. LE did not indicate whether or not they have any idea who they may be. But did say the FBI will be coordinating and working with local LE agencies.

A couple of my ideas are Nancy Moyer and Lindsey Baum. But maybe it's best to look at people who went missing during the periods he was actually living in WA State.

Sure wish we could hear from some of the people he served with while in the Army and living at Fort Lewis.
 
Authorities were not releasing any details about how he killed his victims. They said they wanted to first talk to the victims' families, who will never get the sense of finality that a jury trial or guilty plea would bring.

Loeffler said investigations into the deaths will continue even though there will be no prosecution.

Investigators had spent dozens of hours talking to Keyes in the months since his arrest. He was continuing to cooperate, talking to investigators as recently as Thursday, but only letting out bits of information at a time. His death hurts the law enforcement investigation, they said.

This is so difficult because as far as we know, Keyes had no specific age or sex he targeted! Soooo wish we could narrow this down!

Bryce Herda is the only one still missing from Neah Bay that I'm aware of. 6 year old boy disappeared in 1995. http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/h/herda_bryce.html

I think I read somewhere that he has ties to Texas as well. Wasn't he arrested in Lufkin? I don't know a lot about this case, but I thought I'd throw that out there. I am sure it's better to start with the states that have been named, since he lived there. It's hard to narrow down with no particular victim profile, and because he did travel all throughout the US. How scary and so sad for all of these families that may never know what happened. :(

I wonder if he is responsible for the disappearance of Cedrika Provencher? Aged 9 missing from Trois-Riviers Quebec (canada) July 31, 2007. When was he released from the military?

Google is showing me that Trois-Riviers is about a 2.5 hour drive from Constable NY along a direct route. It is right on the Canada/USA border.
