VA - Patrick Collins, 27, Charlottesville, 22 March 1986
Patrick Collins was a graduate student at the University of Virginia in 1986. He mysteriously vanished one day, and was the subject of a investigation by the University and local police. Unfortunately, nobody was able to find any evidence about what happened to him - whether he left voluntarily (and if so, why) or whether he was the victim of foul play. There's evidence that he left his house and got to his 'office' at the University, and that he vanished from there.
Local journalist Barbara Nordin wrote some in-depth articles for a local weekly paper in the '90s (winning a state-wide award for one article), and has recently set up a website with more information about the case, including her most recent (2011) article, copies of correspondence between LEO and the family, and what was on Pat's answering machine.
I didn't move to Charlottesville until a few years later but was there when Nordin wrote her first series of articles, and this case has never left me.

Collins was reported missing two weeks later by his classmates? Why didn't the landlady? If she was giving him fruit, it sounds like they had a fairly friendly relationship. I would think she would've been concerned if he just randomly didn't come back to his apartment for such a long period.

What happened to Pat Collins? UVA grad student’s bones turn up in NY police locker
11/06/13 at 10:10 AM
Twenty-seven years ago UVA graduate student Patrick Collins vanished, leaving behind a mystery that would haunt his family, obsess local reporters, and raise questions about UVA’s handling of the case. On August 10, New York State Police identified Collins’ partial remains, which had languished in a storage locker for 25 years. While the circumstances of the discovery strongly suggest that Collins took his own life, how he got from Charlottesville to a small town on the shores of Lake Champlain—and why he left his keys, wallet, driver’s license, and glasses in his backpack in UVA’s Jordan Hall—is as puzzling today as it was in 1986.
