"Glynn County Police Chief Matt Doering would not talk about how Sublett was killed. Police said Sublett's wallet was found, but some items were missing.

'I can't tell you any more than we're treating it as a homicide,' Doering said. 'We're searching for some physical evidence. That's all I can say.'
According to police, Sublett was with friends on the mainland on Monday night, and they're trying to establish a timeline of how he got to the marina.

Other county commissioners and their staff were present as Doering released the details of Sublett's death. Some were holding hands and crying.

Commission Chairman Richard Strickland said Sublett's wife called police overnight to report her husband hadn't come home. The body was found between a boat and the dock at a marina just off the causeway before dawn Tuesday morning."

There's also a local news story from Brusnwick here but the specific page link didn't work. Currently lead story. http://www.thebrunswicknews.com/

The autopsy report is back, Commisioner Sublett was shot in the head before he drowned in the Frederica River. His hands were tied with plastic zip ties on front of him. They have not found a weapon and the autopsy has not determined whether this was homicide or suicide.

I saw that a few minutes ago...homicide or suicide...tough decision there...

The investigation continues, but with limited new information. 911 call from his wife reporting him missing was released. GBI still has not determined if this was suicide or murder but they continue to search the Frederica River for evidence. There is a $25K reward being offered for information leading to an arrest. Contact numbers are listed in this linked article:

This happened about 1/2 mile from where I live. The rumors today are swirling bad.

The County Commission has voted to match the reward funds, bring it to $50K for information leading to an arrest.

All eyes now turn to the investigation. Glynn County Police Chief Matt Doering was on hand. He said there are no new details he can release on the investigation, but he did say this has been a difficult one for the department to conduct.
"The personal relationship that we had with the commissioner in a professional and friendship side. It's an extension of family," said Doering. "It changes things. It's not the high profile case of it. It's that it's family. It makes a difference."

"We've had some leads, " said Chief Matt Doering. "I'm going to leave it at that."

"I will not comment on the evidence," Doering said. "I won't comment on anything of that nature."

A Georgia Bureau of Investigation medical examiner concluded that Sublett had a gunshot wound in the left side of his head but had drowned.
Tip line numbers are posted in the last link, too.

This case certainly has a variety of possibilities. Was it a murder or possible suicide? The list of items collected seem a unique mixture (empty holster, pill bottles, variety of types of rounds, and zip ties). Could be murder staged to imply suicide; or maybe he was troubled and took his life. Seems law enforcement either does not have answers or they are building a case. The isolated location not far from home could support various theories. Has anyone heard whether anyone else was at that location or saw/heard anything (cars/sounds/shot)?

mobeydick, have people on the island reached a common consensus on a particular theory of what happened? Or has anything been ruled-out at this point?

I'm sure the situation has folks feeling somewhat uneasy. It's a sad thing.

Georgia Mystery: Was drowning death suicide or murder?
1:49 p.m. EDT May 15, 2015

snip
... Police originally investigated Sublett's death as a homicide. They spoke with Allen Whittington, the friend who left the poker game with Sublett. Whittington said that, per their routine, Sublett dropped him off at around 10:30 p.m. in the Brunswick Winn-Dixie parking lot where he'd left his car.

Seven weeks into the investigation, the coroner reached a conclusion: Tom Sublett had committed suicide. The GBI agreed and closed the case in July 2013.

Mark Johnson, an attorney for the Sublett family, said the victim's wife, children and grandchildren do not believe he killed himself.

"The finding that the coroner made, nobody in the family believes it or thinks it's correct," he said.

This guy does a nice cover of the case:
