This happened yesterday but the victim's name wasn't released until now so I waited to post this. Condolences to his family, sad story for all involved.

A 16-year-old boy fatally shot his friend with a shotgun after the pair argued over a paintball game and playfully wrestled at the boy's home in South Dakota, according to an arrest affidavit released Wednesday.

The victim, Dalton Williams of Pierre, was found lying in the entryway of the accused shooter's house around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday with a gunshot wound to the chest. Paramedics rushed the high school sophomore to a nearby hospital, but he later died.

The accused shooter was arrested at the home on a first-degree murder charge and was being held Wednesday in Hughes County, Pierre Police Chief Bob Grandpre said.

The local prosecutor said the teen is being charged as an adult. He has not yet been arraigned or indicted, so The Associated Press is withholding his name because he is a minor. His attorney didn't immediately return a phone message.

The alleged murderer has been named, he is 16.

PIERRE, SD -

Braiden McCahren, 16, of Pierre has been charged with first-degree murder after court documents say he shot and killed 16-year-old Dalton Williams of Pierre on Tuesday night.

Documents filed on Wednesday say McCahren and another juvenile had just picked up Williams from his house after school and all three of them went to McCahren’s house to get something to eat.

OMG. :what: That was one of my biggest fears when my DS was that age. He was really into paint balling for a year or so. He and his friends formed a tournament team and got really competitive. I was always afraid that someone was going to get hurt or even killed if they shot at each other, either joking around or angry. One time my sons friend was badly bruised after some other kids shot him after he took his protective gear off. He was shot in the shoulder and was sore and had a very large bruise. But if it had been his heart area he could have passed out or died. This is so tragic, for both families.

I've bolded and underlined the part that shows this was NOT an accident. :banghead:

A 16-year-old witness who was hanging out with the boys told detectives that Williams and the other boy began to wrestle around jokingly after arguing about a paintball game.

The accused shooter then retrieved a semi-automatic shotgun, walked into the kitchen area and pointed it at the witness, according to the arrest affidavit.

The witness said he heard the gun click, then saw the accused shooter take a shotgun shell from a drawer, load the gun and point it at him again. The witness said he then heard another click, according to the affidavit.

The witness told police he was trying to leave the house through a sliding glass door when Williams stepped in between him and the accused shooter. The witness told detectives that the gun fired and he observed a splatter, according to the affidavit.

The witness then left the house and called 911.

Dalton is no longer living because he took the bullet meant for his friend, he got between the shooter and the intended victim. Imagine the courage that took and his loss is even more tragic by the character he displayed in the final moments of his life. I spoke with a friend in Pierre today who said that kids in the school are in shock at the loss of a really good kid. RIP Dalton.

The shooter pointed the gun at the third teen, but Williams stepped between the two before the gun fired. He later died at a local hospital, and the shooter has been charged with first-degree murder

So sad. Kid's aren't even safe with their friends anymore..

Residents of South Dakota's small capital city struggled Thursday to comprehend how the lives of three families were torn apart when a 16-year-old boy was fatally shot by a classmate, the community's first homicide in more than a year.

Braiden McCahren made his first court appearance Thursday after being charged as an adult with first-degree murder. Authorities allege he shot his friend, Dalton Williams, with a semi-automatic shotgun on Tuesday after an apparent argument that involved a third boy at McCahren's home. All three boys were 16.

About two dozen people sat in the courtroom as McCahren, the son of a well-known local attorney, appeared through a video link from the county jail. Circuit Judge John Brown told the teen his rights and explained the charge against him. His attorney did not ask for bond.

The judge told him he could try to move the case to juvenile court. McCahren's lawyer, Brad Schreiber, said it was too early to say whether he would make the request.

The dynamics of this event are unexplainable now. Friends I have spoken with say they don't understand what happened. Dalton's family is devastated, as is his friend, the one the shooter pointed the gun at originally. This is a relatively small place, even though it is a state capitol, and many are saddened by this event.

So it was not a paintball gun---it was an automatic weapon? How did it go from paintball weapons to real bullets? So tragic.

A Hughes County grand jury indicted 16-year-old Braiden K. McCahren Friday on charges of first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder and alternate counts of aggravated assault, in connection to the shooting death of another Pierre teenager, according to court documents.

According to the documents, McCahren is accused of shooting 16-year-old Dalton Williams with a semi-automatic shotgun on Dec. 18. The charges of attempted first-degree murder and aggravated assault stem from allegations in the court documents that McCahren also pointed the weapon at a third teenager, known in the documents as “T.Y.”

McCahren was charged with first-degree murder on Dec. 19 after Pierre Police officers responded to reports of a gunshot on the 400 block of North Buchanan Avenue the day before.

High Court overturns ruling in SD teen homicide

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - The South Dakota Supreme Court has overturned a ruling by a circuit court judge that a Pierre teenager accused of murder should be tried as an adult.

The high court ordered Judge John Brown to reconsider the issue - without using the testimony of a psychologist who examined 17-year-old Braiden McCahren.

JE
How do 2 teens go from horsing around to one of them grabbing a shotgun, loading, and firing it at other teen (under these circumstances)?

So the SD app ct ordered trial judge to RECONSIDER his order trying the teen as an adult and to reconsider w/out the psych's testimony (but app ct did not say trial judge could not come to same decision - try as adult)??? If I understand???

Whether tried as juvie or as adult, sad all the way around.

There was a third boy in the house who was able to get away without harm. It is confusing but so is the South Dakota justice system. I have seen cases here where the expected sentence and/or charges aren't in fact what happens. The crux of this is that the psych's questions to the boy went to far and so that expert testimony is negated.

JE,
Yes, I read several articles about the shooting.
Just hard for me to understand teens' (any of the three) thinking and actions.
Horsing around, then one teen shooting another.
WTH?

May be a combination of drugs, teenage male posturing and bad luck.

About 6 years ago we lived a few blocks away from where this happened. Pierre is a small town but it has it's problems.

this is horrific so he took gun Play from paintball; and instead loaded a real weapon? WTF? How did he get to this horrific conclusion that this is how he would "handle" things? Wow.

McCahren case participants consider options

A conference call between the judge and the two sides was held Wednesday. There were no decisions made and another conference call is set for next Wednesday.

Moore says Brown has three options: 1) Hold a new transfer hearing; 2) Order a new psychological or psychiatric examination if he chooses; or 3) Issue a new ruling, using all of the presented evidence, except that of Scovel.

McCahren remains in custody at the Hughes County Juvenile Detention Center. His trial is scheduled to start January 21 in Pierre. Moore hopes the trial can start as scheduled.

One of McCahren’s attorneys, Brad Schreiber of Pierre, declined comment.
