Student who was gang-raped, pushed from bus is in critical condition

Edited by Abhinav Bhatt | Updated: December 17, 2012 13:28 IST

New Delhi: A 23-year-old medical student in Delhi is struggling for her life after she was first gang-raped and then beaten with an iron rod for nearly 45 minutes in a bus last night.

A male friend who was with her and tried to protect her was also attacked with the same rod. He suffered injuries on his head and hands.

Both were thrown out of the moving bus in Mahipalpur in south Delhi, which is close to the Indira Gandhi International Airport. They were discovered lying semi-naked near a flyover from where they were moved to hospital.

The victim and her friend, who works with a software firm, watched a movie at Delhi's Select City Walk mall in Saket last night; at about 9 pm, they took an auto to Munirka and then boarded a "whiteline" bus - these are buses managed by private operators that supplement Delhi's public buses.

New Delhi: Delhi reinforced its reputation as one of the country's most unsafe cities when a young woman was allegedly raped by five men in a moving bus last night. The female, 23, and her friend were then thrown off the bus, semi-naked, at a flyover. The victim is at the Safdarjung Hospital in critical condition.

The uncle of the man accompanying the victim said they had boarded a whiteline private bus at around 11 pm from Munirka in south Delhi to go to Palam, where she lives. The whiteline buses ply for schools, offices and also as chartered buses in the Capital. About 10 minutes later, a few people on the bus began harassing her, he said, and when her friend objected they allegedly beat him up. "They took out a rod and beat him badly and then dragged her to the bus cabin where they raped her," the uncle said.

The men then allegedly took off much of the victims' clothing and threw them off the moving bus near the Mahipalpur flyover in south Delhi. The woman is a student of medicine in Delhi University. Her friend, who used to work in a software firm, was escorting her home after watching a film at the Select City Walk mall in Saket. They had taken an auto from there till Munirka.

The police said they received a phone call at 1:15 am about the incident. A first information report or FIR has been lodged.

The male friend of the victim is at the Vasant Vihar police station. The police said it was not clear yet whether the five assailants were passengers or bus staff.

No arrests have been made so far; the police have seized two buses and are checking to see if either is the one that the woman was raped in last night. They are also creating sketches of the accused based of the friend's description and are monitoring CCTV footage in the area.

Indian police chief damned for suggesting chilli powder to foil rapists

Comments follow brutal Delhi bus gang rape, which triggered protests across the country and demands for death penalty

The Guardian, Thursday 20 December 2012 14.53 GMT

Indian-students-march-on--008.jpg

A senior Indian policeman has provoked furious reactions from women's rights campaigners after advising women to avoid rape by not travelling after dark and carrying chilli powder to throw at potential attackers.

This is heinous! Such a horrible story.

I did want to comment on chili powder. I have been reading about the pepper spray we use here in the U.S. In some places in the U.K. it is not allowed, yes, pepper spray. People are trying to stealthily make their own with chili powder (which in India means hot chili powder) and conceal in small portable squirt bottles you would use for airplane packing, you buy them in the travel or cosmetic sections. Recipes are online.

I don't know how beneficial pepper spray is or even just a handful of chili powder, but I don't think the policeman's suggestions were any different than anywhere else in the world.

that poor woman and her friend. :(

Her chances of making it don't sound good to me. She suffered a heart attack, brain damage, organ failure. Even if she makes it, what will be her quality of life?

"But by late Friday, the young woman's condition had "taken a turn for the worse" and her vital signs had deteriorated with indications of severe organ failure, said Dr. Kelvin Loh, the chief executive officer of Singapore's Mount Elizabeth hospital."

RIP
She “passed away peacefully” with her family and officials of the Indian embassy by her side,” said Dr. Kevin Loh, the chief executive of Mount Elizabeth hospital where she had been treated since Thursday.

BBM. Oh why don't I believe that.

The woman and a male friend, who have not been identified, were travelling in a public bus after watching a film on the evening of Dec. 16 when they were attacked by six men who took turns raping her. They also beat the couple and inserted an iron rod into her body resulting in severe organ damage. Both of them were then stripped and thrown off the bus, according to police.

sigh

Oh my god, that is horrific, I am so sad for the girl, her friend that tried to protect her, and her loved ones. What a senseless, sick, brutal act. They should all get the death penalty. I am so tired of hearing these stories. Sigh.

RIP...how horrifying. The whole story is horrifying.

R.I.P. you poor child! Beaten, battered, raped! No one deserves that! Why does mob mentality turn so deadly so fast? That is what it would be wouldn't it, mob mentality? Or mayhem?

India is one country I would NEVER visit! My sister visits every few years for spiritual reasons. Sheesh give me a good strict Muslim country like Iran any day (where they will arrest men that dare touch or harrass women).

Here is an interesting video on "women only" trains in India, the were started to help curb the horrendous sexual harrassment and groping that has gone on forever. Notice the reporter implies it is really just because women have joined the work force and started riding the trains more (meaning the men aren't at fault).

^ Are you serious about Iran?? They treat women awfully.

This case is just horrific. RIP.
