Lake Arthur Woman Stabbed in the Mouth

June 14, 2010
Charges against Jones, and the other suspect were dismissed. The official reason was a lack of evidence, and unreliable witnesses.

Stabbed in the mouth? That's an odd one. Sounds almost like there was a struggle, and he missed his mark.

The phrase "Snitches get stiches" could be also "Snitches get found in ditches" in these cases.

was his intent--i bet they never ran dna on him before they dropped the charges the first time ---wonder if they ran it now?--the good news his should be jailed for awhile

Hi.

I was preparing to search for some photos of where she was found but I keep seeing different locations labeled on different maps. The only description I can find is this;

Ernestine’s partially clothed body was found, by froggers, floating in a drainage canal off LA highway 102 a couple of miles southeast of Jennings.

Can someone point me in the right direction?

What is the correct drainage ditch & cross-roads along Highway 102?

Also stated about 6 miles from Loretta. Not helpful, I know. Of note, these were only a couple of months after the drug bust gone wrong at Gallup Street.

Hope someone can find a location, I would guess the family know. I would look at the videos again, but can't tonight.

Maybe something in the 5/24/10 videos listed here in 6 parts, click the parts the main link is no longer working:

Are you talking about the fatal shooting of Leonard Crochet?

This is only the 4th victim I've sleuthed yet for some reason I can already sense that the details about and the investigation of her murder was less than stellar.

So there was an arrest too but he was let go because of lack of sufficient evidence?

This is an ongoing theme in many of these murders. People (often the same people/groups of people but different victims) are arrested/labeled as suspects but then released.

However, we don't just have one guy (or one group of people) arrested/suspected for all (or of those murders that had POIs, suspects, arrests made, whatever). IMO, We seem to have at least 2 different people (& accessories) or different sets of groups.

Yes. I cannot find any news sources about it though. It was in April 2005 iirc.

Parole bust leads to shooting
Sixteen charged with various violations
JDN April 21,2005

A LE officer shot an unidentified white male, during police inspection of a local residence, which resulted in a major narcotics seizure and 16 arrests.
Louisiana Probation and Parole agents led officers from the Jennings Police Dept., JDSO, and LSP Troop D as they closed in quickly and silently to the 600 block of Gallup St. in Jennings.

There are also newspaper photos from the raid further down the thread. Odd that LE would take a news crew along on a raid, don't you think? But they did.

It's also interesting to note that the raid occurred at the home of Harvey "Birddog" Burleigh, who was later found stabbed to death in his home.

Wow! Thanks for the article MK, I looked for an entire work day while no one was there.

Right now the server seems to be down so I will check it again later to read the entire thing.

I have NEVER heard of LE taking along a news crew to anything, much less something potentially so volatile. Very interesting.

Whatever was going on a whole lot of people seem to have been involved.

A local actually had to go to the library and look up the news article on microfische. Can you believe that? All this technology, and good old microfishe saves the day. Go figure.

Another thing that has me scratching my head...why on earth were Jones and Nixon charged with manslaughter? Even under the legal definition of voluntary manslaughter, I can't make that charge fit, given what we know. So, there either has to be something about the murder of Ernestine that we don't know, or...well... (I'm stuck for words here)...

http://www.klfy.com/Global/story.asp?s=4805465

According to this article, Jones was originally charged with 2nd degree murder. So the charge was lowered to manslaughter for some reason. Is that an option in a plea deal? Cops say, "You roll over on so and so, and we'll lower your murder charge to manslaughter" ? I'm dumbfounded. Someone give me a clue here.

I don't know anything about the case specifically, but certainly a criminal charge might be reduced (by the judge, by the prosecutor, or upon motion of the defense) without any "deal" at all if the evidence is clearly not going to be sufficient for a conviction on the original charge.

Considering that even the manslaughter charges were eventually dropped for lack of evidence, that would be my guess here.

Thanks so much, AZ. So, the charge was probably less about fitting the actual circumstances of the murder, and more about just trying to make anything stick? Seems like a hell of alot of wasted time and money.
