GUILTY AR - Laura Aceves, 21, murdered in her Eureka Springs home, 31 Dec 2012

Murder charges are pending after a Eureka Springs woman was found shot to death.

The Carroll County Sheriff says Laura Aceves, 21, was found lying in a pool of blood in her apartment at 15096 Highway 62 West around 12:40 p.m. Monday.

Aceves, who appeared to have a gunshot wound to the head, was taken to Mercy Hospital in Rogers, where she later died. Sheriff Robert T. Grudek says a metal object was also lodged in her head.

Investigators said Victor Acuna-Sanchez was found hiding in the shower of his home in Berryville after police found Laura Aceves, 21, shot to death about 12:40 p.m. Monday.

A .22-caliber handgun was found on the floor of the shower, police said.

Laura Ponce waited almost two years to hear Victor Acuna-Sanchez admit that he killed her daughter.

On Monday morning, Acuna-Sanchez pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and was sentenced to 25 years in prison. Speaking in a quiet voice and with his back to the Carroll County, Arkansas, courtroom, he admitted to killing his ex-girlfriend Laura Aceves and called the act a "mistake," according to several people present.

On New Years Eve 2012, Aceves was shot in the head and left to die with her 4-month-old baby lying by her side. Her murder followed a string of reported assaults at the hands of her abusive ex-boyfriend.
