Sheriff thinks Conn. tragedy a factor in bomb plot

    http://www.centurylink.net/news/read...SNWU00L1_UNEWS

PHENIX CITY, Ala. (AP) — An Alabama teenager teen who described himself as a white supremacist made journal entries about a plot to bomb classmates three days after the Newtown school massacre and began building small homemade explosives, a sheriff said Monday............

Taylor said the boy told investigators that he's a white supremacist and five of the six students he named in his journal are black. The journal was found by a teacher, who turned it over to authorities................

The sheriff said he didn't believe the teen's initial claim that the journal was a work of fiction.

"When you go to his house and you start finding the actual devices that he talked about being made, no, it's not fiction anymore," Taylor said. "Those devices were — all they needed was the black powder and the fuse — he had put a lot of time and thought into that.".............

District Judge David Johnson set bond at $75,000 and the teen's attorney said the family expected to post it by the end of the day for his release.................more at link.....

...not one faculty member or administrator at the racially mixed school intervened in the blatantly racist behavior until early January, when a teacher found one of Shrout’s notebooks left behind in a classroom. In it, the teacher discovered detailed plans for mass murder.

Shrout allegedly named and targeted five black students and a black teacher for serious harm in a series of bomb attacks, using improvised hand grenades that authorities say he was assembling in his military family’s home. A white classmate, who Shrout suspected of being gay, was also on the alleged hit list...

“By his own admission, he is a white supremacist, but we haven’t been able to link him to any specific organization or any organization to him,” Russell County Sheriff Heath Taylor told the Intelligence Report in an interview about Shrout and his plans, which Shrout had “obviously put a lot of thought into.”...

    July 2014:

A Russell County teenager who pleaded guilty to planning an attack at his high school with homemade explosives was sentenced this week to two years' supervised probation followed by three years in prison, the Associated Press reported

Assistant District Attorney Jamie Graham told the AP that the judge will review Shrout's case at the end of two years' probation, and he could decide to switch the prison sentence to probation.

... Shrout and his friends had wandered their school's halls shouting "white power" and performing Nazi salutes for several months leading up to the discovery of Shrout's notebook

Outrageous. I can't help thinking that he would have received a much, much harsher sentence if he'd been a Muslim instead of a white supremacist.
