OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (AP) — Being chained as a 10-year-old for more than two weeks in a coffin-size box in a suburban New York dungeon was, Katie Beers says 20 years later, "the best thing that happened to me" because it allowed her to escape a life of abuse.

On the 20th anniversary of her ordeal, Beers has co-written a book with a television reporter who covered her kidnapping. "Buried Memories: Katie Beers' Story" (Title Town Publishing) has a happy ending.

Beers is now a 30-year-old married mother of two who earned a degree in business management and works in insurance sales near her home in rural Pennsylvania.

Her kidnapping attracted nationwide attention in early 1993, when revelations surfaced while she was still missing that she had suffered years of neglect from her mother and had been repeatedly sexually assaulted by her godmother's husband since she was a toddler.

Thanks for posting this Reader!

This is so hard to read.....

"In the book, she writes of being able to see Suffolk County police officers searching for her via closed-circuit television, but they were unable to see her.

Esposito also installed a voice-activated tape recorder to the dungeon in order to record Katie's voice throughout her captivity.

The recordings included Katie's tearful singing of Happy Birthday to herself. She was kidnapped one day before her tenth birthday.

She can also be heard saying: 'Please don't do that to me again tonight', referring to the repeated sexual abuse she suffered throughout her captivity."

From above link:

"Of her childhood, Katie says: 'Being abducted was, unfortunately, the best thing that happened to me, because it got me out of the abusive situation.'

When she was freed, the then-ten-year-old was adopted by a couple in East Hampton, New York, who tried to provide her with as normal a life as possible.

'I owe them my life', Beers says of her foster parents. 'But you never fully recover. It's with me every day, but it's something I've learned to cope with.'"

MINEOLA, N.Y. (AP) — A man convicted of imprisoning a 10-year-old girl for 17 days in a suburban New York dungeon was found dead in his cell, and she expressed sympathy for his family but not for him.

John Esposito was found unresponsive at a prison in Ossining, N.Y., on Wednesday, said spokeswoman Linda Foglia. The death is under investigation but does not appear to be suspicious, she said.......

Beers, now 30, noted the coincidence of Esposito's passing one day after notorious Cleveland kidnapper Ariel Castro committed suicide.

"I tweeted something about how within 24 hours, two monsters have died."

The Lifetime movie "Girl in the Basement" was on last night and was loosely based on the Elisabeth Fritzl case in Austria. Good movie.

After the movie ended, there was a short program about child abuse/abduction with Katie Beers featured. She shared her story and how she has channeled her life to help others.

Lori Poland also shared her story of when she was taken at 3 years old from her front yard back in 1983, abused and put in an abandoned outhouse cesspit 15 ft underground in the foothills of Colorado. It was a miracle that some passing birdwatchers heard her faint cries and searched until they found her in the hole from which she was rescued. They asked her what are you doing down here and she replied I live here.
