BRASILIA, Brazil (AP) — A fire swept through a crowded nightclub in southern Brazil early Sunday, killing at least 245 people and leaving at least 200 injured, police and firefighters said.

Police Maj. Cleberson Braida told local news media that the 245 bodies were brought for identification to a gymnasium in the city of Santa Maria.

The cause of the fire is not yet known, officials said.

The newspaper Diario de Santa Maria reported that the fire started at around 2 a.m. at the Kiss nightclub in the city at the southern tip of Brazil, near the borders with Argentina and Uruguay.

Rodrigo Moura, whom the paper identified as a security guard at the club, said it was at its maximum capacity of between 1,000 and 2,000, and partygoers were pushing and shoving to escape.

The fire appeared to be among the world's deadliest in a nightclub since a 2004 fire killed 194 people at an overcrowded working-class nightclub in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

A blaze at the Lame Horse nightclub in Perm, Russia, broke out in December, 2009, when an indoor fireworks display ignited a plastic ceiling, killing 152.

A nightclub fire in the US state of Rhode Island in 2003 killed 100 people after pyrotechnics used as a stage prop by the 1980s rock band Great White set ablaze cheap soundproofing foam on the walls and ceiling.

And a welding accident reportedly set off a December 2000, fire at a club in Luoyang, China, killing 309.

Whatttt?? How can 240 people not be able to escape a club fire? So sad!

Considering similar incidents of indoor fireworks igniting a fire and killing many people in a night club happened before, are people ever going to learn? I am talking about those who organizes this type of entertainment.

Michele Pereira, another survivor, told the Folha de S. Paulo newspaper that she was near the stage and that the fire broke out after band members lit flares.

"The band that was onstage began to use flares and, suddenly, they stopped the show and pointed them upward. At that point the ceiling caught fire. It was really weak but in a matter of seconds it spread," Pereira said.

apparently there was only one exit, and some people were trampled trying to get out .. :(

Wow that is so sad. I didn't think anywhere could have one exit anymore. Especially a venue that held a max of a 1000 people one article said. And 2000 people were inside, double the max. I mean good lord! Someone is in huge trouble!

Guitarist Rodrigo Martins told Radio Gaucha that the band, Gurizada Fandangueira, started playing at 2:15 a.m. "and we had played around five songs when I looked up and noticed the roof was burning"

"It might have happened because of the Sputnik, the machine we use to create a luminous effect with sparks. It's harmless, we never had any trouble with it.

"When the fire started, a guard passed us a fire extinguisher, the singer tried to use it but it wasn't working"

He confirmed that accordion player Danilo Jacques, 28, died, while the five other members made it out safely.

so sad!

in cases like this: who's most "responsible" for the deaths?

the band for their idiocy?
the club for lack of emergency exits/allowing the pyrotechnics?
the gov't for not ensuring there were enough exits?

HORROR IN BRAZIL

"Local fire officials said at least one exit was locked and that bouncers, who at first thought those fleeing were trying to skip out on bar tabs, initially blocked patrons from leaving. The security staff relented only when they saw flames engulfing the ceiling."

"The vast majority of the victims, most of them university students, died from asphyxiation, officials said. Others were crushed in the stampede."
