Colombian-style band missing in northern Mexico
MONTERREY, Mexico (AP) — Authorities in northern Mexico still have no leads after searching two days for 20 people with a Colombian-style band who went missing after a private performance at a bar, an official with the Nuevo Leon State Investigation Agency said Sunday.

The 20 people include 15 members of Kombo Kolombia and the band's crew.

People living near the bar in Hidalgo municipality north of Monterrey reported hearing gunshots about 4 a.m. Friday, following by the sound of vehicles speeding away, said the source with the state agency.
---
The officials added that gunfire is common in the area, and said investigators found spent bullets nearby.

For three years, Kombo Kolombia has played a Colombian style of music known as vallenato, which is popular in Nuevo Leon state.

more at the link; Kombo Kolombia are not a narcocorrido band, btw

Mexican police are searching for 12 musicians and eight roadies who went missing after a gig on Thursday night.

Kombo Kolombia, who are all Mexican but play Colombian music, played a private show in Hidalgo in the country's north, but haven't been heard from or answered mobile phones since.

MONTERREY, Mexico (AP) — At least eight bodies were found in a well in northern Mexico on Sunday near the site where 20 people went missing late last week, including members of a Colombian-style band, according to a state forensic official.

Gov. Rodrigo Medina told a local television station that four of the bodies had been pulled from the well, and said it could hold as many as 10 cadavers.

Medina said experts were still working to identify the corpses, but noted "we have evidence that indicates that (the bodies) may very well be the members of this band."

Forgive my Aussieness, wfgodot - but what's a narcocorrido band?

And this is just... so crazy. A whole band murdered and thrown down a well.

Just when you think you've seen it all...

Song-wise, a narcocorrido is a drug ballad, often about smuggling and the perils and triumphs therein.

Narcocorrido (Wiki). One of my faves is an old-school group called Los Tigres del Norte.

Drug violence has ripped Mexico utterly apart. Chances are Kombo Kolombia ran afoul of a drug cartel somehow.

Could have involved drug sales, drug smuggling - or something like not paying the proper respect to el jefe (the boss).

Surviving Mexico band member leads police to bodies

Nuevo Leon state security spokesman Jorge Domene said the survivor, a member of the Kombo Kolombia band, told police the 18 were blindfolded and driven on dirt roads until they stopped. He then heard the assailants ask fellow band members if they belonged to a drug cartel, shots were fired and the bodies were dumped into a well.

Domene said the survivor, who is being protected by soldiers, was able to reach a nearby ranch and get help. He wouldn't give details on how the man was able to escape.

Wow, just senseless. Killing just to kill. Makes me sick.

Regarding the fact that KK was a vallenato and not a narcocorrido-based band, it seems it probably didn't matter:

Members of other musical groups have been murdered in Mexico in recent years, usually groups that perform "narcocorridos" that celebrate the exploits of drug traffickers. But Kombo Kolombia did not play that type of music, and its lyrics were about love and heartbreak and did not deal with violence or drug trafficking.

But singers of drug exploits are not the only musicians targeted, said Elijah Wald, author of the book, "Narcocorrido: A Journey into the Music of Drugs, Guns and Guerrillas."

"There is really not correlation. Drug guys hire people to play for their parties and they hire whatever is happening," he said.

Wald's book - published years ago now - is great, btw.
