Ireland - Kevin McGeever, 68, County Galway, 2012

Now this is a very, very weird story:

A missing Irish property developer has been found wandering, lost and emaciated on a country road, eight months after he disappeared.

Kevin McGeever, 68, is recovering in hospital in Mullingar, County Westmeath.

He was found barefoot, ragged and with an abusive word carved into his head.

He was dishevelled with a long beard and very long fingernails and had lost a lot of weight. [...]

Cllr Kenny said the man told the couple [who found him] that some men had dropped him off in a van and he had been a long time in that van. [...]

Irish broadcaster RTE's crime correspondent Paul Reynolds said Mr McGeever told gardai he had been kidnapped from his home by a masked gang eight months ago but he could not recall what happened to him after that.
It will be interesting to see how this develops.

Mystery of Irish property tycoon found dumped on country road (Guardian)
    ---
Catherine Vallely discovered the missing man on Tuesday night. She was on her way home to Ballinamore with her partner Peter Rehill when they spotted him in the middle of the road.

"He had red trousers that made me think it was a cone in the middle of the road," Vallely told the Irish Independent. "When the man got into our car, he told us he had no shoes on. He said three men threw him out of a van."

The couple took him straight to Ballinamore garda station. The couple said he told them he had been thrown out of a van and was unable to tell what month of the year it was or what happened to him during his captivity.
    ---
"He had a pair of enormous eyes in a very thin face and his cheekbones stuck out. He was rubbing his beard with fingers that had long nails. He was very well-educated, well-spoken and polite and articulate. He was just skin and bones," she said.

This is bizarre. What in the world could the motive have been and what led them to release him after 8 months

Who held Kevin McGeever in a dark room for eight long months? (Irish Independent)
Locals say developer is just as mysterious as his bizarre abduction
    ---
The strange story of the kidnapped developer has captivated the media. Reports said he identified his abductors as Russian mafia who took him at gunpoint, that the word "thief" was carved into his forehead and that he had been starved to the point of malnutrition. However, according to garda sources, Mr McGeever has not nominated any suspects and the inscription on his forehead was written with ink that will fade in time.
    ---
After that, all he can remember is that he was held in a dark room but could not say whether he was tied up, and that his captors came and went with food, such as sandwiches, and water.
    ---
His muscle wastage and some slight injuries indicate he was held captive for a period, but gardai are still trying to figure out who may have kidnapped him and where he was held. Apart from a plastic sheet wrapped around him as he wandered on the rural road, his only possession was a brand new mobile phone which had no call history.
    ---
The mystery of Mr McGeever's abduction and his sudden return has baffled detectives, who are now delving into his past for clues.
    ---
According to one local man, he left the area in the 1960s, moving abroad, and only returned home sporadically.

His parents are dead, but some siblings still live in the region. "The thing is that nobody, but nobody, heard that he was missing," said one local man.

Who Kidnapped Irish Millionaire Kevin McGeever? (Daily Beast)
The property magnate was found last week wandering the Irish countryside with THIEF carved in his forehead. A shocked nation is closely following the investigation—but with not much sympathy, given developers’ low standing in Ireland. Tom Sykes reports.

If "formal questioning" means the same thing in Ireland as in the UK, then that suggests he's a suspect. Hmm.

I think the formal questioning is more to get an accurate version of what happened to allow them to investigate, at least tats the way this article makes it seem.

If there is a book I want to read it. This is quite the head-scratcher.

There will be way more to this story to come out. I know this guy pretty well, he was chased out of Australia for property fraud in the late 80's with the local mafia after him, surfaced in America where he continued his fraud before heading to Dubai. He will turn up somewhere else but he is fast running out of safe havens.
Never pretend to be something your not... Sooner or later you'll be found out.

    and.....he's missing again

Kidnap riddle tycoon Kevin McGeever’s passport was flagged yesterday [14 Feb] when he failed to answer the mobile phone number he gave cops, and as CAB officers raided his partner’s home.

The businessman — who claims he was abducted by a gang — is wanted by Interpol. And the FBI are investigating if he is a fugitive they are seeking over a $7million scam.

Gardai planned to carry out a full interview with the magnate when he recovered in hospital. He had been found emaciated on a remote country road eight months after vanishing. But since discharging himself from hospital, McGeever has gone missing AGAIN.

This is a fascinating case. Do you know when he surfaced in the USA and in what area of the country? TIA.

Detectives investigating the kidnapping and then mystery reappearance of an Irish property tycoon last month believe he may have been freed as a panic reaction to the murder of one of their Garda colleagues.

Security sources in the Republic are exploring the theory that Kevin McGeever's captors are one-time Provisional IRA members who are now aligned to armed republican dissidents.
