Discovered on December 9, 1999 in a wooded area near Midland Court, just southeast of Winder in Barrow County, Georgia.

Cause of death could not be determined.

It is believed the man's body was in the woods for six to eight months.

State of Remains: Skeletal

Estimated age: 55-60 years old (DOB: 1939 - 1949)
Approximate Height and Weight: 5'4-5'9"
Distinguishing Characteristics: He underwent reconstructive surgery to his skull at some point in his life, possibly to repair damage caused by a car accident. He had a plastic surgical insert just below one eye socket. Investigators found a piece of brown hair among the man's remains.
Dentals: Available. He had some cosmetic dental work.
Clothing: The only scrap of clothing found was the elastic waistband of a size 34 pair of Hanes underwear.

Case History

The case does not appear to be in NAMUS, so I can't know for sure whether the following MP has been looked at/ruled out:

Mervin Leo Walvatne

Circumstances of Disappearance
Mervin Walvatne was reported missing on December 16, 1990, by his sister who lives in Spencer, Iowa. She became concerned when she had no contact with him since July 18, 1990. Prior to that time she had regular phone contact with Mervin who was living in Arizona.

(underlines by me)

Mr. Walvatne was described as an alcoholic transient. His last places of residence were in the Yuma/Tuscan, AZ area. In the late 1970’s he also resided in the Madison, WI area, during this time he was involved in a car accident that required extensive facial surgery.

Missing since July 18, 1990 from Spencer, Clay County, Iowa.
Classification: Endangered Missing

Vital Statistics

Date Of Birth: July 8, 1937
Age at Time of Disappearance: 53 years old
Height and Weight at Time of Disappearance: 5'6; 150 pounds
Distinguishing Characteristics: White male. Brown hair; green eyes.
Marks, Scars: Unknown tattoos on his arms. One possibly of his name, Mervin
Medical Conditions: Facial injuries that required extensive facial surgery. Fractures to nose, eye and cheek area that required wire and plastic to repair them.
Dentals: Upper Denture.

The UID's case says some cosmetic dental work, which might be inconsistent, or they might mean the denture that was possibly related to his facial reconstruction, but in that case why not just say so? Otherwise though, he seems to fit pretty well.

A WS member has offered assistance in contacting LE regarding Mervin as a possible match to this UID. I will let y'all know if I hear anything about a potential match.

This is strange to me. How could the profiles be so different? Bbm

The NamUs profile doesn't mention the facial trauma. All it does say is only finger bones found. Yet there's an estimated height of 5'6". Whereas the Doe profile doesn't mention the finger bones specifically it does say about 90% of the skeleton was recovered.

The National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs)
Circumstances of Recovery
Found by persons looking to pick up pecans. Approx. 1/2 mile from a trailor park. Complete search of the 10 yard radius produced all finger bones. Rim of underwear found under tree with large larvea concentration. 33 Woodlawn Ave. Winder, GA 30680.

Hmmmm... cosmetic dental work??? Wish there were some elaboration on that. You bring up some good points YaYa.

When I see Donnie, his cheekbones stand out most to me followed by his close set eyes. The UID seems to have similar features. I think it’s worth submitting!

Possibly Douglas Eugene Kirk 1186DMAR - Douglas Gene Kirk? He is a lot younger than the estimated age range for Woodlawn John Doe as he was 35 when he went missing but he is known to have had reconstructive surgery on his face following a car accident that occured several years prior to his disappearance. Charley Project profile: Douglas Eugene Kirk – The Charley Project.

Woodlawn John Doe has been unidentified for 21 years today.
