GUILTY Guam - Three killed as man drives into crowd, stabs bystanders, Tumon, 12 Feb 2013

HAGATNA, Guam » Guam police say three people are dead after a man crashed a car into a convenience store at a resort, then got out and began stabbing those around him, sending frightened hotel guests fleeing for safety.

Eleven others were hurt after the crash at a shopping area at the Outrigger Guam Resort on Monday night, the Pacific Daily News in Hagatna reported today. Fire officials say a total of 14 people were taken to Guam Memorial Hospital.

Guam Police Chief Fred Bordallo said at a news conference early today that authorities had a suspect, described as a "young adult male," in custody.

All of the victims were Japanese, including an eight-month-old baby and three-year-old toddler who both survived. The toddler's mother Rie Sugiyama, 29, died as she desperately tried to shield her daughter from the knifeman.

Another relative, 81-year-old Kazuko Uehara, also died. They had been in Guam for a family wedding.

Hitoshi Yokota, 51, died from injuries sustained when De Soto's car crashed into him.

A Guam man convicted of killing three Japanese tourists last year when he rammed his car into a group of pedestrians and then began stabbing bystanders was sentenced Thursday to life in prison.

Guam Superior Court Judge Anita Sukola sentenced 22-year-old Chad DeSoto to three life sentences to be served concurrently. De Soto will be ineligible for parole, Sukola said.
