SALLISAW, Okla. (CBS Houston/AP) — Sequoyah County authorities say a man who died in a fire at his home may have spontaneously combusted.

Danny Vanzandt, 66, died in the blaze on Monday.

Sequoyah County Sheriff Ron Lockhart says several neighbors entered the home when they saw smoke and assumed trash had caught fire. Then they realized a person was burning.

What I find even more amazing is the temperature they must reach to burn to ashes so quickly.

I have always been fascinated by SHC...and some of the things I note which are common to all (most?) cases are age (generally not young), heavy weight, alcohol, chair sitting, and cigarette smoking. Maybe something between the body fat and "thin skin" as we age, combined with flammable alcohol, and the strange aerodynamics of chairs with an ignition source of a cigarette combined makes this happen? Although there has to be something else - lots of folks don't die from sitting in a chair after tying one on smokin' a ciggie.

Still, when I'm not sober, I stay away from recliners and suchlike...just to be safe.

i don't know whether to hope he's an abuse victim or not to hope so. if his family lit the fires he could have a chance once away from them... if he spontaneously combusts every so often that's bound to be more difficult to control but at least he'd have his family...

he's not a smoker and not an alcoholic at his age so the usual easy explanations don't quite fit...

if i had to bet i'd say an abuse victim.

When I hear humans who spontaneously combust, this comes to mind.

I remember having a book about amazing facts or something, when I was younger, and SHC was the thing that fascinated me the most! What a horrible way to die though....

Was it "Strange Stories Amazing Facts"? My grandparents had this when I was a kid, I think it was probably a Time Life or Reader's Digest thing. I used to scare the BEEJEBUS out of myself with that book.

I will ask mum and see if she remembers. I remember being freaked out too :scared:
