Huge explosion, fire near Country Club Plaza in K.C.; critical injuries reported

Huge fire burns near Country Club Plaza (KMBC)
KANSAS CITY, Mo. —Firefighters were called to the scene of a huge fire at a building just west of the Country Club Plaza.

A gas explosion and fire rocked J.J.'s Restaurant just west of the Country Club Plaza Tuesday evening.

A gas explosion started the fire just before 6 p.m. at J.J.'s Restaurant near 48th Street and Belleview Avenue. People in the area said they smelled gas and heard the explosion.

James Armer said he was about a mile and a half away and heard the explosion and saw debris flying about 100 feet into the air.

Firefighters said were there preliminary reports of injuries in the fire. KMBC 9's Johnny Rowlands said he saw 15 ambulances at the scene. St. Luke's Hospital said patients with critical injuries have been brought to the facility and it was calling in extra staff members.

A vehicle apparently crashed into a gas main near JJ's. Appears to be an accident. Car? Backhoe?

You can also purchase a weather radio which will inform you of severe weather even if your electricity goes out. Runs on batteries of course.

This is of course worrying to those in KC or who know the Plaza and the area.

But this was Kansas City's largest building disaster, in 1981. (Wiki)

Briefing by Fire Chief Berardi and Mayor James: Three-alarm fire; nearly 100 firefighters were on scene; KCPD's bomb squad and ATF among others investigating scene, along with KCFD and MGE; 14 transported from scene to area hospitals; cadaver dogs at scene; fire chief fears fatalities; at least three still missing; lots of area windows blown out by explosion; apparently accidental; may have stemmed from accident involving building contractor; KMBC reporting backhoe "may have" had something to do with explosion; crews now sifting through rubble.
