Eighteen months ago, deputies searched woods just a couple of miles away for the remains of 10-year-old Zahra Baker.

Federal Bureau of Investigation agents and local police are scouring dense woodland in Caldwell County in North Carolina after turkey hunters discovered the skull on Tuesday afternoon, according to US television news station WSOC-TV.

Police confirmed that skeletal remains were found at the site, but would not say if a skull was among the remains.

Asked if the remains could be those of 10-year-old Zahra, an unidentified source told US TV station WBTV that it was "crossing their minds".

This one says the skull will be release to the appropriate family members.

Police said Thursday that the examination of the skull didn’t provide any further details on how Zahra was murdered.

"This information gives the members of 'Team Zahra' mixed emotions," said Police Chief Tom Adkins. "It brings up the tragedy of Zahra's death and the life she lived before she was killed, but it also gives us and the community a sense of finally bringing her home."

"Our county and all the folks who worked on this case are reminded of the days spent trying to find Zahra. She will be in our memories for the rest of our lives,” Caldwell County Sheriff Alan Jones said.

Police said the remains will be returned to the appropriate family members.

At least we have the closure of knowing it is found and being returned to her family in Aus.

Just saw this on twitter...thank goodness. Poor baby. I had forgotten they had found the skull and were testing it. I wonder what took so long?

Working together, the NC SBI’s Crime Lab, NC Medical Examiner’s Office and Marshall University in Huntington, W.Va., were able compare a DNA profile used for the prosecution of Elisa Baker in Zahra’s murder case to the skull found in Caldwell County to confirm the findings, according to a release from Hickory Police Department.

Zahra, that sweet girl. She now knows the peace and love she did not know when she was subjected to the horror of Eliza et al. She did not receive justice in this life, but Creator has a way of healing all wounds and truth comes out. Be at peace, baby girl.

Eliza et al., may the true punishment you did not receive in this life be realized when it is your time to walk over.

How far away was her skull found from the rest of her remains? Thank goodness it was found :(

I'm very relieved they've successfully identified Zahra's skull. Disappointed they were unable to determine any more information about her death from it. And content the Australian Embassy will be arranging for it to be returned home to be buried with her other remains. Poor Zahra, sweet child.
