GUILTY NH - Edith 'Pen' Meyer, 55, Goshen, 22 Feb 2005

Do es anyone know how far Goshen is from where Maura Murray disappeared?
Or from where Amie Riley's body was found?

According to Mapquest, Goshen, the town that Edith "Pen" Myer is missing from is 67 miles southeast of Haverhill where Maura went missing.

Goshen is 65 miles northwest from Manchester where Aimie Riley's body was found.

Two cars seized by police may contain clues to the disappearance of Edith "Pen" Meyer, who disappeared from her home in Goshen last week. One car was found in Claremont, and the other car was taken from a Lempster resident, police said. No further information was released about the vehicles.

Investigators also spent much of the day searching a cabin in that town.

With LE picking up the two cars is sounds like they have a suspect in mind, or at least a good lead.
This is pretty local for me, I grocery shop in Claremont. These towns are small and people notice everything... I hope they figure this one out quickly. Theres been too much of this around here of late.

A number of women in New Hampshire have been missing or murdered in mysterious circumstances in recent years:
 • Maura Murray, a nursing student at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, crashed her car on Route 112 in Swiftwater in February 2004, walked into the woods, and disappeared, leaving no trace.
 • Brianna Maitland, also a U-Mass student, vanished after leaving the restaurant where she worked in Montgomery, Vt. the following month.
 • Louise Chaput, of Sherbrooke, Quebec, was stabbed to death while hiking in Pinkham Notch in November 2001.
 • Tina and Bethany Sinclair, residents of West Chesterfield, left their home one night in February 2001, and haven't been heard of since. However, in that case, authorities have identified a probable suspect in the disappearance of the mother and daughter.
The publicity surrounding the current case has brought plenty of tips from the public.

This is a sad story, this woman is dead because she helped a friend out of a bad situation.

It's heartbreaking.

Delker declined to elaborate on the exact manner of Meyer's death for that reason.
Nonetheless, some new information has emerged. Authorities said Meyer's charred body was found in a fire pit on Carpenter's five-acre property at the end of Quimby Farm Road. While no one said specifically that she had been murdered there, Carpenter's address is given as the place where the crime is said to have occurred.

A man accused of murdering a woman and burning her body asked his wife to dispose of a pile on their property that turned out to contain the woman's bones and jewelry, an investigator testified.

Kenneth Carpenter's wife instead called police, who identified the remains as those of 55-year-old Edith Pen Meyer, who had disappeared in February.

Authorities believe Carpenter, 53, killed Meyer and burned her body at a firepit at his house because she helped a woman with whom Carpenter had an affair get a restraining order against him. Bones were found earlier this year in the firepit.

A grand jury has indicted a man accused of killing a Goshen woman after she encouraged his girlfriend to break up with him.

Kenneth Carpenter, 54, of Lempster, was indicted on a first-degree murder charge in connection with the death of Edith "Pen" Meyer who went missing on Feb. 23, according to Senior Assistant Attorney General Will Delker.

Authorities accuse Carpenter of murdering Meyer because she helped Carpenter's girlfriend get a restraining order against him and advised her to stay away from him.

Court records show Sandra Merritt, 45, broke off an 11-month affair with Carpenter in November, then accused him of stalking her.

Carpenter repeatedly blamed Meyer for meddling in letters, confrontations and phone conversations, court documents show.

From 2007:

Jurors deliberated for two hours yesterday before finding Ken Carpenter guilty of killing Pen Meyer of Goshen and incinerating her body.

Carpenter, 56, of Lempster was arrested on March 3, 2005, eight days after Meyer, 55, went missing and three days after the police found her bones in a fire pit on his property. Carpenter was sentenced yesterday to life in prison with no possibility of parole...

Several jurors said after the sentencing that it was Carpenter's own words - on recorded phone calls and in writings outlining his plan for Meyer - that convinced them of his guilt.
