Sauk County authorities are searching for a missing woman and her three-and-a-half year old son. Investigators say 20-year-old Maria Jose Mendieta may be on her way to Mexico or Uruguay with her son Leonelly or "Leo" Barron.

"Custody of the child was transferred to his mother on Feb. 20," Strunz said. "According to the court order, the child should have been returned to his biological father on Feb. 26."

The missing boy is about 2 feet, 7 inches tall, 35 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes, his hair cut in a "frohawk" style, long and wavy on top and shaved on the sides.

Sauk Co. Police are asking anyone with information about the mother and child's whereabouts to call the Sauk Co. Sheriff's Department at 800-377-1195.

Online court records show Mendieta and her husband, 23-year-old Edgar Omar Barron of North Freedom, are in the process of getting a divorce. A hearing regarding the custody of the child was held Jan. 24.

Maria Jose Mendieta & Leonelly "Leo" Barron​

Maria Jose Mendieta, and her son Leonnelly Barron were last seen on February 22nd, 2013 in Sauk City, Wisconsin.



Maria is a Hispanic/Latino woman, 4’9”, and 140 pounds. She has straight, shoulder length brown hair and brown eyes. She has a tattoo of Snoopy and Charlie Brown. She also has a tattoo of a star on her right hand.

She may also be going by Maria Jose Rampa or Maria Jose Barron.



Leonelly is a Hispanic/Latino male, who was 2’7”, and 35 pounds at the time of his disappearance. He has brown hair and brown eyes.

Maria and Leonelly might be traveling with Alejandro Martinez who lives in Mexico. They may be traveling in a blue 1998 Plymouth Voyager van/minivan. It has a Wisconsin plate with the number 477-JJP. It is believed that they could be traveling to Uruguay or Mexico.

Maria was 20 years old when she went missing. She would be 29 years old today. Leonelly was 3 1/2 years old when he went missing. Leonelly would be about 12 1/2 years old today.
