Anthony Darnell Liddell, 19, a sophomore from Bennettsville, S.C., died after the shooting around 7:20 p.m. Tuesday at a residence hall complex near the campus, school spokesman Doug Bell told the Los Angeles Times by telephone.

There was no immediate motive in the shooting, Tom Berry of the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division told The Times.

Authorities believe that Liddell and McDonald knew each other, said Thom Berry, a spokesman for the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.

"We believe there was some connection between the two," Berry said. "This does not appear to be an isolated incident involving these two individuals. It just so happened to occur on a college campus."

McDonald previously had faced drug charges, according to criminal records.

His mothers only child, Davis said the family called Liddell T.J. for Tony Jr., after his father, and that he loved helping people, and he loved kids. She said Liddell was a good kid respectable, well-mannered and churchgoing who loved to have fun and loved video games, music, freestyle rap and making his own CDs.

This was a kid who was in National Beta Club in high school, and he graduated with honors, said Davis, who said he was like her own child, and that they talked often. He never had any issues with any of the normal stuff teenagers do.

I can't imagine why a young man with such a promising future became a victim of this senseless violence. So sad for his family.

Jurors learned Wednesday, in the second day of testimony, that Marquis McDonald had signed up to work with police as a drug informant and that he and Anthony Liddell Jr., texted each other about buying marijuana before Liddell’s fatal shooting...

Stephon Mclain, 24, also is charged with murder in Liddell’s killing as well as a separate murder charge from a 2012 homicide. Officials said Mclain will be prosecuted at a later date...

Will Lynch, an officer with the Drug Enforcement Unit, testified he retrieved the information on McDonald’s phone and it showed multiple text messages and phone calls between McDonald, Mclain and Liddell the day before and the day of the shooting.

Stephon Mclaine, 25, of Conway, was sentenced to 15 years in prison June 1 after pleading guilty to one count of armed robbery...

But the murder charge was dismissed after Mclaine pleaded guilty to the robbery charge, a representative with the 15th Judicial Circuit said Friday.

Co-defendant Marquis McDonald was convicted of murder in October 2014 and sentenced to 45 years in prison.
