Donnie Snook investigation: Hunt for unknown sexual predator took Toronto police 22 months

In March 2011, Det. Paul Krawczyk began an online hunt that would last 22 months. It would end as one of the worst cases hes ever investigated, culminating in the arrest of beloved Saint John city Councillor Donnie Snook.

Donnie Snook was as close to sainthood as it got in Saint John.

Sitting on city council for two consecutive terms, the 41-year-old former Salvation Army officer championed the razing of derelict buildings, helped drive biker gangs out of town and fed warm lunches to children through a Christian youth ministry.

He was the soldier for the marginalized, said former city councillor Patty Higgins.

But that image was shattered this January after a Toronto police officer sitting in a dark, windowless room 1,500 kilometres away spent 22 months tracking an unknown predator online.

"The detective didnt know then how long the hunt would last in the end it would be the lengthiest of his career or that it would uncover what he says today is one of the worst cases hes ever investigated.
At that point it was pretty straightforward, to be honest . . . I thought that would be the end of it, Krawczyk said. I personally believe that once all the evidence comes out in this case and the public learns all the details, it will turn the city upside down.

"Reportedly a never-married bachelor, Snook raised an unknown number of foster children for 25 years. He became known for advocating for Saint Johns youngest, offering a popular hot lunch program called the Chicken Noodle Club

Donnie Snook plea on sex-related charges held over
More charges expected against former Saint John councillor

    http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/new-br...nook-plea.html

Former Saint John Coun. Donnie Snook was expected to enter pleas on eight child exploitation charges Monday, but the case was adjourned until May 29 at his lawyer's request.

The 41-year-old suspended youth ministry leader was not present in Saint John provincial court and was not videoconferenced in either because the videoconferencing equipment has been moved to the new Law Courts building at Peel Plaza.

"There's not much to say," defence lawyer Dennis Boyle told CBC News after the brief court matter. "The police need more time," he said.

"We are waiting for the full package, the complete investigation, full disclosure. By May 29, everything should be done."

Snook, who has been in jail since his arrest on Jan. 9, remains in custody.

A confidential RCMP document cites Cuba as a top destination in the Americas for Canadian sex tourists, and says the issue of “travelling child-sex offenders is likely greater than previously thought.” The 2011 report, obtained through Access to Information, acknowledges “a more determined, yet strategic, response by Canadian police could uncover many more Canadian offenders committing sexual offences abroad.”

Beefing up the country’s police response to travelling sex offenders, the report concludes, will take “additional resources, more effective co-ordination and collaboration between Canadian law enforcement and foreign police, and better reporting mechanisms for Canadians who witness suspicious behaviour abroad.”

"At a news conference in Dartmouth, N.S., Wednesday, police said they seized 43 computers and millions of child porn images in Operation Snapshot 2, which targeted "high-risk offenders who collect, possess and/or distribute child sexual exploitation material online."

"These are not images of a 16-year-old standing topless at a swimming pool, these are images of children being raped, some are in diapers, this is the worst of the worst," Det. Const. Chris Purchas of the Toronto Police said"
