Homicide investigation pairs teams from Spokane, Whitman counties

Wednesday's homicide investigation is about 60 miles north of Malden. A Spokane County Sheriff's Ofc. spokesman said, as of 10:15 a.m., he could not confirm whether the investigation outside of Chattaroy was related to the Stapert case. Whitman County Sheriff Brett Myers could not confirm the connection either, but says deputies did not stumble upon the crime scene. Investigators were led to this location because of others' statements, Myers said.

Spokane County deputy Craig Chamberlin said the investigation led Whitman County detectives to believe the victim is located near Schwartgen Road south of Deer Park.

Spokane County Sheriff's detectives confirmed Wednesday afternoon, they found a body buried 4-5 feet deep in a thickly wooded area of north Spokane County.

The discovery came after Whitman County Sheriff's detectives got a tip that a body may be buried in the rural spot near Elk-Chattaroy & Bruce Roads. Suspect: Malden teenager died eating chunks of meth

Court documents filed on Thursday in Whitman County court revealed new details about the death of a Malden teenager. One of the suspects told investigators that Donavin Stapert, 17, passed out and died from eating chunks of methamphetamine.

The files also say the suspects took his body upstairs and put him into a safe and left him there for a few days. The witness also told investigators that they discussed dumping the body somewhere in eastern or southern Oregon. Police believe that eventually the suspects loaded the safe into a vehicle and dumped the body.

I'm glad the suspects are talking so they could find Donavin and know what happened. But this has to be awful for his family.

Donavin Stapert's father arrested in burglary of Bilderback home

The father of deceased Malden teenager Donavin Stapert is in jail on a $100,000 bond after being arrested for allegedly burglarizing the home of the man accused of killing his son.

Jason L. Stapert told investigators he stole more than $28,000 worth of guitars, alcohol and other items from the Malden residence of Bobby Bilderback to retaliate against Bilderback for allegedly taking his son's life, according to a probable cause affidavit filed in Whitman County Superior Court.

The meth was allegedly provided by Bilderback, 44, who is in jail on a $1 million bond.

He pleaded not guilty last week to charges of controlled substance homicide, distributing methamphetamine to a minor, endangerment with a controlled substance and possession of methamphetamine. He is scheduled to face a jury in June.

    From September 2013:

Friday afternoon, 44-year-old Bobby Bilderback was sentenced to roughly five and a half years in prison for his role in the drug overdose death of 17-year-old Donavin Stapert...

Judge Frazier said that he went with the maximum felony sentence because the crime involved a juvenile, and because Bilderback previously served 20 years in prison for a first degree murder.
