Four people have been shot dead at a car wash and a barber shop in upstate New York, state police told NBC affiliate WKTV.

At least two others were shot and injured, The Associated Press reported.

The barber shop is in Herkimer and the car wash in Mohawk. The towns lie roughly halfway between Syracuse and Albany.

The suspect is still at large, Sgt. Martin Luppino of the Herkimer Police Department told NBC News. He could not comment on the extent of the injuries of those who were wounded.

Local schools are on lockdown, AP reported.

..........SWAT officers, snipers and an armored vehicle had zeroed in shops along the main street of Herkimer, about 65 miles east of Syracuse. Witnesses said police had been communicating with the suspect, Kurt Myers, 64, of nearby Mohawk.

Myers is wanted for killing two people and wounding two others at John's Barber Shop in Mohawk, then driving across the Mohawk River and gunning down two more people at Gaffney's Fast Lube, a Herkimer carwash.

Police said Myers began the day by setting fire to his home. Investigators found several weapons inside............more....

HERKIMER, N.Y. (AP) — A man neighbors said rarely spoke to them started a fire in his apartment on Wednesday, shot four people dead at a couple of businesses in his hometown and a neighboring village and then exchanged gunfire with police officers who surrounded an abandoned building where he apparently was holed up, authorities said.

Police officers were fired on from the upstate New York building on Wednesday afternoon while looking for 64-year-old Kurt Myers, state police Superintendent Joseph D'Amico said. At least one officer returned fire, and later it was unknown if Myers was still alive, D'Amico said.

"We're in no rush to bring this to a conclusion," D'Amico said, adding that the main objective was to make sure no one else was hurt.............

I'm in total shock. I grew up in the Mohawk Valley, went to school K-12 in Frankfort, took violin lessons in Mohawk, bought our groceries in Ilion, worked at the Burger King in Herkimer. My parents used to get their oil changed at Gaffey's.

It was a totally safe, small, tight-knit community. What a tragedy.

This standoff has gone on for hours, and no one knows what has set this man off. I hope he gives himself up soon without any more loss of life...

Twitter has honestly had better real time coverage than most of the local media:

It seems that some locals were just wandering around, even when LE was yelling at them to get away.

From another source, there were loud bangs earlier today.

Loud bangs, alarms and a PA system were heard early this morning at a barricade situation at 248 N. Main St. in Herkimer, where police believe a man who shot four people to death Wednesday morning still is inside.

Neighbors say he was a loner, sometimes hostile to others.

His only other crime was a DUI in 1973. Sounds like someone with personality/psychological issues.

Slightly OT, but I do a lot of genealogy research on ancestors from Herkimer, NY. If this guy is originally from this area, his ancestor was a highly respected officer, Lt. Petrus (Peter) Myer, who served in the Revolutionary War. The town of Herkimer is named for Gen. Herkimer, commander of the Tryon County Militia who fought the Battle of Oriskany - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia against the British in 1777. It's featured in the movie "Drums Along the Mohawk". There are a lot of descendants of those 18th century German pioneers still living in the area. It's a beautiful, very historic area. Such a shame to see such a tragedy there.
