2 killed when small jet crashes into homes near South Bend airport

    http://www.wsbt.com/news/wsbt-lear-j...0,537834.story

A small jet has hit at least three homes on Iowa Street southeast of the South Bend Regional Airport. FAA spokesman Roland Herwig confirms of the four people on the jet, two were killed.

At least three people have been taken to Memorial Hospital with injuries that are not life-threatening, according to a hospital spokesperson. Two are in fair condition and one is serious. The person in serious condition is undergoing surgery. .............

This happened around 4:30 p.m. According to South Bend fire, the plane was 8 miles west of the airport headed to runway 9. It touched down one time then started to climb again and then it crashed.

On approach the pilot reported a problem with electrical power, according to the FAA.

Neighborhood resident Stan Klaybor says the aircraft clipped the top of one house, heavily damaged a second, and came to rest against a third. He says one resident hasn't been seen.

Our reporter on scene says the plane is upside down on a home.

During a news conference, the South Bend fire chief of training said "This is now a rescue effort," but the search is dangerous because of structural damage to the house the plane is lodged inside and the jet fuel. .............

It looks like it might be children who were killed, from your link:

The neighborhood has been evacuated because of a gas leak.

Neighborhood resident Stan Klaybor says the aircraft clipped the top of one house, heavily damaged a second, and came to rest upside-down against a third. He says one resident hasn't been seen.

Neighbors tell WSBT-TV that at least one of the homes had children in it when the jet crashed. Their safety has not been confirmed.

Ugh. This is my absolute worst nightmare. Doesn't help that I live on a flight path. Honestly, I 'duck and cover' whenever a low flying plane/helio is going over.. not that it would help but it's just sooo terrifying for me.

All the houses have not been cleared yet...

    http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories...medium=twitter

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) -- A private jet apparently experiencing mechanical trouble crashed Sunday in a northern Indiana neighborhood, hitting three homes and killing two people aboard the plane, authorities said...........

It was not clear if anyone on the ground was killed, and Herwig [FAA] did not have any additional information.

South Bend Memorial Hospital spokeswoman Maggie Scroope said three people injured in the crashed were being treated there; one was in serious condition and two were in fair condition. Scroope did not know if they were on the plane or the ground.............

In South Bend, Assistant Fire Chief John Corthier said everyone on the plane and in the first house struck by the jet had been accounted for four hours after the crash. That wasn't true of the other two houses, and Corthier couldn't say how many people they were still trying to track down.

"We absolutely don't know," Corthier said, adding that the presence of jet fuel and structural damage made the scene "very dangerous" for investigators. The aircraft remained lodged in one of the homes late Sunday.

"We have to shore up the house before we can enter the house," he said.

Investigators from the FAA and National transportation Safety Board were expected to arrive on the scene Sunday night, Corthier said.

Part of the neighborhood southwest of the airport was evacuated after the crash, and Corthier said it was possible some residents would be allowed back into their homes Sunday night.

Electricity was cut off to part of the neighborhood..........

Former Oklahoma QB 1 of 2 dead in Ind. plane crash

    http://www.centurylink.net/news/read...&cps=0&lang=en

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — People who knew former Oklahoma quarterback Steve Davis say his passion for flying began before he arrived at the school and led the Sooners to back-to-back national championships in the 1970s.

"He absolutely loved getting in the air," said Deron Spoo, pastor at First Baptist Church in Tulsa, Okla., where Davis went to church.

Davis, 60, and his friend Wesley Caves, 58, died Sunday when Caves' small aircraft smashed into three homes in northern Indiana, St. Joseph County Coroner Randy Magdalinski said Monday. Davis' parents, Jim and Patsy Davis of Sallisaw, Okla., confirmed his death. Three others were injured, including two passengers.

Caves, of Tulsa, owned the Beechcraft Premier I twin-jet. He had a pilot's license, but it was not immediately clear if he was at the controls when it crashed.

Patsy Davis said she believed it was possible her son would have been in the co-pilot's seat..............

Frank Sojka, 84, who lives in the first home that was struck, went back to the neighborhood Monday morning to tell police what items he wanted retrieved. A total of eight homes remain under mandatory evacuation............

Two others on board the plane survived, South Bend Assistant Fire Chief John Corthier said. South Bend Memorial Hospital spokeswoman Maggie Scroope said Monday that Jim Rodgers was in serious condition and Christopher Evans was in fair condition. Davis' parents said they didn't know the relationship between their son and Rodgers and Evans.

A woman who neighbors said lived in the middle house that was struck, Diana McKeown, was in fair condition, Scroope said. Edgar Diaz, a spokesman for Memorial Hospital, said the survivors have declined requests for media interviews.
