IL - Michelle Manalansan, 29, Chicago, 9 Feb 2013 *Arrest*

Body of Missing Student Found Inside Mattress

Michelle Manalansan, 29, was last seen wearing a pink jogging suit near her North Loop residence, in the 300 block of East South Water Street, on Feb. 9, according to a missing person alert issued at the time.

Her body was found Sunday in an apartment in the 1400 block of West Cullerton Avenue, authorities said. She was inside a plastic air mattress that had been cut open, a police report stated.

A Monday autopsy seeking a cause of death was inconclusive.

A California man has been charged with the murder of a Harold Washington College student whose decomposed body was found in a Pilsen neighborhood apartment in March 2013.

Faramarz Bakhshi, 23, of Whittier, Calif., has been charged with fisrt-degree murder and concealment of a homicide for the death of 29-year-old Michelle Manalansan, authorities said.

From a feature article dated April 7, 2014:

The roommate, police learned, was wanted by the Cook County sheriff for a probation violation. They also learned that a relative had bought him a ticket to Los Angeles on a train that left Chicago six days after Manalansan disappeared.

Despite the circumstances, police classified the case as a noncriminal death investigation. A detective soon made it an even lower priority: He suspended the case until the roommate could be “located and interviewed.”

Manalansan’s death certificate on file with the Cook County clerk’s office says that she died by homicide — specifically, blunt head and neck trauma.

    Held without bond:

A downstairs neighbor reported hearing “running and then a slamming on the ground,” Assistant State’s Attorney Robert Mack said in court Saturday.

Two days after the killing, a cleaning company went to Manalansan’s apartment in the 300 block of East South Water Street, and Bakhshi would not let them in, authorities said.

That night, someone saw Bakhshi leave Manalansan’s building with her dog, according to Mack, who said Bakhshi later dropped the dog off with his sister, who bought him a train ticket to California on Feb. 15, 2013, so he could move there to live with their mother. Mack said Bakhshi told his mother that Manalansan died of an overdose.

Months after Manalansan’s death, Bakhshi shared a post on Facebook that said, “It’s only murder if they find the body; otherwise it’s a missing person. Just a thought…”
