"Bloody Mingo," it used to be known.

W.Va. sheriff fatally shot, suspect in custody (ABC)
WILLIAMSON, WVA -- A sheriff known for cracking down on the drug trade in southern West Virginia's coalfields was fatally shot Wednesday in the spot where he usually parked his car for lunch, a state official said, and a suspect was in custody.

State Police told Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin that Mingo County Sheriff Eugene Crum died of his wounds, said his chief of staff Rob Alsop. The suspect, who was also shot, was taken to a hospital in Logan, Alsop said.
---
Though there is no indication of a direct connection, Crum's killing comes on the heels of a Texas district attorney and his wife being shot to death in their home over the weekend, and officials suspect a white supremacist prison gang. Those killings happened a couple of months after one of the county's assistant district attorneys was killed near his courthouse office. Colorado's corrections director, Tom Clements, was killed March 19 when he answered the doorbell at his home outside Colorado Springs.
---
Delegate Harry Keith White, who campaigned with Crum last year, said his friend was shot to death in the same place where he parked his car most days to eat lunch, near the site of a former pharmacy known for illegally distributing pills.

Crum led a drug task force and an initiative called Operation Zero Tolerance, making good on a campaign pledge, White said.

Thanks for posting that interesting article.

He seemed like a really good guy.

What the heck is going on. Since when do people have the gall to mow down public officials in this country ? I hope this ' trend' stops ASAP.
RIP :(

ITA!

Officials that are dealing with the "war on drugs" and making major arrests seem to be "in the line of fire".

Prayers to the Sheriff's family and friends.

I wonder if the murders are all connected. It's almost unheard of to murder a top law enforcement official in broad daylight- in the parking lot of their local courthouse.

Yet both this latest murder of this sheriff & the murder of the assistant DA in Texas had these same, extremely rare similarities. Granted they happened about 1,000 miles away, but it still seems too strangely similar to be a coincidence.

Details of Mingo County Sheriff shooting death revealed during briefing (WOWK)
WILLIAMSON, W.Va. (AP) - State police say the man suspected of gunning down a West Virginia sheriff pulled a weapon on a deputy who shot him.

Authorities didn't reveal the condition of the suspect, 37-year-old Tennis Melvin Maynard. West Virginia State Police Capt. David Nelson said Maynard was taken to a local hospital, where he remained Wednesday evening.

Nelson said Maynard crashed into a bridge, held up a gun as he got out of the vehicle and was shot.

Judge Paul Farrell made a preliminary ruling Thursday that Tennis Maynard is now competent to stand trial. The ruling comes after a recommendation from doctors at Sharpe Hospital in Weston, West Virginia, where Maynard has been since 2015.

Kanawha County Assistant Prosecutor Don Morris says the defense has 15 days to decide if they want to have full competency hearing. If not, a trial date will be set.
