Does anyone know when his trial is to begin?
 
The trial has been delayed a few times, but I want to say it's supposed to start in April? Don't quote me on that.

I wonder if they'll have it in Port Coquitlam, or will they move it into Vancouver? I'm nearby, I wouldn't mind attending a day or two.
 
Maybe a trial date will be set in March. Setting a date has been delayed several times due to defense requests to examine evidence:

Pickton is expected to make an appearance via video conference March 31 in BC Supreme Court in New Westminster for a hearing. I wonder how long the trial will take.....months I'm sure. They certainly spent long enough searching the Pickton Pig Farm. I wonder how many poor ladies were/are there. Something makes me think he's not being tried for all the murders???

It's cases like this that make me wish we still had the death penalty in Canada. I hope he at least gets a true life sentence. Too often criminals are given "life in prison with no chance of parole for XX years" Is it a life sentence or not?

I am not sure of the exact number of murders they have tied to him, but I have read that he has been determined to be one of Canada's most prolific serial killers. So he will probably never get out. I know there are something like 50 or more missing women. But they are only prosecuting for the ones they have found DNA for. I wonder how many they have actually tied to him with DNA? His brother has never been charged, but he has a past conviction for sexual battery. I have always wondered if he wasn't involved too.
 
A judge has been appointed to hear the case of accused serial killer Robert Pickton, whose trial will likely start next January, a B.C. Supreme Court hearing was told Thursday.

Judge Geoffrey Barrow of Kelowna, B.C., will hear the case, beginning May 25 with disclosure arguments from the Crown and defence, said Associate Chief Justice Patrick Dohm.

Dohm said he was speculating on dates, but he expects pre-trial arguments will probably begin in September, with the trial following in January.

The man accused of being Canada's worst serial killer was charged Wednesday with 12 new counts of first-degree murder.

The new charges come on top of the 15 charges Robert Pickton already faced. Seven of the new charges arose from Pickton's preliminary hearing. The other five charges came from evidence developed since the preliminary hearing.

Defence lawyer Peter Ritchie told the judge that he wants a stiffer publication ban on the case to prevent what happens at pre-trial proceedings before a jury is empanelled from being broadcast or published in foreign media and on the Internet. Pickton has not yet formally elected to stand trial by jury.

The Crown had said it expected to add another seven counts before Pickton's trial and DNA samples of nine additional women were identified on the farm.

The trial is expected to begin in the fall with a lengthy voir dire, or trial within a trial which often examines evidence before it is presented to a jury. The public portion of the trial is expected to begin in January in B.C. Supreme Court in New Westminster.

The judge scheduled to hear Canada's biggest murder case was replaced Wednesday only a couple of days into pre-trial proceedings.

Justice Geoffrey Barrow of B.C. Supreme Court is stepping aside because of "scheduling problems" with accused serial killer Robert Pickton's trial and other cases, Associate Chief Justice Patrick Dohm told lawyers at a brief hearing.

Barrow, who normally is based in Kelowna, B.C., had just begun hearing arguments last week in a defence application for a strict publication ban on pre-trial proceedings in the sensational murder case.

Dohm said he'll be replaced by Justice James Williams, who normally sits in New Westminster's Supreme Court.

Crown spokesman Stan Lowe said outside court that when this segment of hearings is finished, the court would turn its attention to formally fixing a date for the start of hearings to determine what evidence can be put before a jury. The trial, which would begin after that, won't likely start until next spring or fall.

Earlier this year, Justice James Williams of B.C. Supreme Court rejected a bid by the accused's defence to effectively seal the courtroom for hearings.

Williams said a section of the Criminal Code that spells out the scope of publication bans in pre-trial hearings is sufficient even to deal with defence fears about Internet publication of what's heard in court.

Pickton's defence team worried widespread media interest in the case, especially from foreign news organizations, would prompt widespread dissemination of evidence discussed in pre-trial hearings.

Robert William Pickton has been charged with 26 counts of first-degree murder. He has pleaded not guilty to the first six counts in what is expected to be the most macabre and lengthy murder trial in Canadian history.

The 56-year-old pig farmer is charged with murdering the women, most of whom vanished from Vancouver's impoverished Downtown Eastside neighborhood in the 1990s.

The first trial covers the murders of Sereena Abotsway, Mona Wilson, Andrea Joesbury, Brenda Wolfe, Georgina Papin and Marnie Frey, and is expected to last a year.

Hundreds of people began lining up before dawn outside the small courthouse in the Vancouver suburb of New Westminster, vying for the 50 seats in the courtroom.

The... victims’ families did not hear an apology or any words of remorse from the convicted killer.

On Wednesday morning, almost two decades since Ms. Lane was last seen, her mother appeared at a Vancouver press conference. Michele Pineault carried with her a wooden box. Inside that box were her daughter’s remains. Two bone fragments, pieces of her daughter’s vertebrae.

Small things. But much greater than microscopic wisps of DNA from other women, recovered by investigators at the same Port Coquitlam crime scene following Pickton’s arrest for murder in 2002...

The remaining charges were stayed because the Crown felt a second trial would be too difficult and lengthy to prosecute. Another reason: with six life sentences, there’s almost no chance that Pickton will ever be released from prison. He will die behind bars. Of course, that’s cold comfort for the relatives of the 27 other women whom he was either charged with or suspected of killing.
