    UK - Josh Thomas, 18, Rochester, 7 April 2013

Josh Thomas went missing after a night out drinking with friends on Tuesday 7th April. He is posted at the Brompton Barracks, although is originally from Neath in South Wales.

I was going to post about him a couple of days ago, but there was so little information available, although a lot more is being shared now.

Rochester is a very quaint little town, most famous for being home to Charles Dickens. It is full of individual shops, tea rooms and restaurants, with a good few pubs too. Many of the streets are cobbled and it has retained a lot of it's old world charm.

Josh was drinking in The City Wall wine bar - one of the larger bars - and was sitting outside on a bench with a friend after midnight. He then wandered away from the direction of his barracks and fell over half way across the bridge toward Strood.

A car stopped and reversed back to him and it's believed they chatted for a short time before Josh turned around and headed back the way he had come. He was last seen on CCTV, off of the bridge, outside another pub at around 1am. He was thought to be very drunk, judged by the way he was weaving around on the CCTV images.

I'll post the links and attempt a map with all the points previously mentioned. In the KentOnline article, there is a picture of the bridge and also a close up photo of his missing poster - the poster is on the traffic island referred to in the story - the last place Josh was seen.

    Hope this is clear enough.

His last sighting was very close to the river. There have been several young men lost to that stretch of water in recent memory

Just to add - most bars close at 11pm on a Tuesday, so I very much doubt he would have gone into the Crown nor the one opposite, which I believe is called Expectations (see, Dickens!). Some will stay open later at the weekend, but few (probably none) would admit anyone 'new' after 11pm, even if they are late openers. Someone who is obviously drunk would certainly not be admitted - all have bouncers on the doors.

Police are now looking for two males on BMX bikes who were captured on CCTV shortly after the last sighting of Josh.

I wish they would release CCTV shots of these potential witnesses - it could serve to jog someone's memory or help lead to identification.

I hope he doesn't have PTSD or something similar.
Whilst being on Websleuths makes me more aware of what evil there is in the world, it also reminds me that the best people are among us as well.

This is so frustrating - they have been saying they were riding BMX bikes for over a week now - why would a couple of guys who were actually riding mountain bikes come forward? Precious time has been wasted

There were reports of searches taking place around the top of Gas House Road - I have added a yellow marker to the map to show that area. The road passes under the railway and is mainly industrial wasteland, although some has been cleared for coach parking (Dickens pulls in the crowds). I'm going to have a drive around there tomorrow to see if anything jumps out, but I fear the lad is in the river

See what the correct information can do - the photos were only released this afternoon and the bike riders have already come forward!

Two bike riders who could have key information about the disappearance of teen soldier Josh Thomas have come forward today.

Kent Police this afternoon released a new CCTV image of the cyclists in Rochester on the night the 18-year-old went missing.

Now the force has said the pair have been in touch with police to help with their inquiries.

April 20th, 2013: '...we are fearing the worst...'
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-kent-22230302

    This really doesn't look good.

The BBC report suggests that police are 'focusing' on the river. Frankly, I can't believe they haven't searched the water, and searched again. And again. If they haven't got the manpower or the divers, they could try asking the army - who I am sure would be more than willing to help one of their own.

Maybe I'm just missing some news reports. I hope so.

Oh, for heaven's sake. Some people have been suggesting he's gone awol. That just isn't helpful when there is a missing boy who needs to be brought home and a family desperate to have him back. I bet you the army doesn't think he's gone awol. He needs people searching for him, not sitting back saying he's gone missing deliberately. The circumstances just don't fit that scenario.

Updated 23rd April. Kent police website page. Updated, yet it is still appealing for the bike riders to come forward, when I believe they already have?

I can't find anything about river searches. Or public searches. This poor boy's family must be beside themselves.

If you have any information about Josh Thomas, call DS Spicer on 101 (UK only). *Or if you wish to remain anonymous, call Kent Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 (this freephone number will also only work in the UK).

Police boats & helicopter have been out searching the foreshore pretty much since he went missing, although I have no idea how many actual hours this equates to. The river is pretty wide and fast (by UK standards) at that point, and relatively close to the estuary, which is 5 miles wide in places. Because of the flow and it's tidal nature, they won't send divers in as they really don't know where to start looking.

Brompton Barracks is the headquarters of the Royal Engineers so I'd have expected something a bit more innovative and full on from his regiment!
