Dow takes brief but steep fall after false AP tweet

The Dow Jones Industrials dropped 144 and recovered it in minutes a little after 1 p.m. when a false tweet about explosions at the White House went out over the Associated Press' Twitter feed.

Before disabling its account, the Associated Press said in a subsequent Tweet that its account had been hacked.

"All: The main @AP Twitter account has been hacked, The tweets coming out of there are false. We are working to correct the problem," the Associated Press Twitter feed said.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Hackers took control of the Associated Press Twitter account on Tuesday and sent a false tweet of two explosions in the White House that briefly sent U.S. financial markets reeling.

In the latest high-profile hacking incident involving social media service Twitter, an official @AP account reported that two explosions at the White House injured President Barack Obama.

AP spokesman Paul Colford quickly confirmed the tweet was "bogus," but within 3 minutes of the tweet hitting the Web, virtually all U.S. markets took a plunge on the false news in what one trader described as "pure chaos."

White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters that Obama was fine soon after the tweet went out a little after 1 p.m. EDT (1700 GMT).

They need to find and convict whomever that cyber-jerk was...

Who takes their news from twitter and reacts immediately to it?
Seriously?

Riiight! Pretty crazy! Especially about something so important!

Exactly!
Waiting 5 minutes would have told them it was fake... because AP responded.
If it hadn't been fake, 5 minutes is all it would have taken to be on EVERY major network!
Patience people, patience!

Someone could have made a LOT of money if they knew the report was fake and they bought up large amounts of stock as the prices dipped.

Hmmmmm.
