Corey Nolan Smith, 26, of 189 Drummond Switch Cut-Off Road in Empire, was last seen in June 2009. Walker County Sheriff John Mark Tirey said new information led investigators to believe evidence in Smith’s disappearance could be found at or around a residence on Stacks Bottom Road in Empire.

Sartech K-9 Unit, a cadaver dog team based in Harvest, assisted in Wednesday’s search. Seven members of the group and five dogs participated, and Williams said the dogs hit on certain spots on the property.

“We were able to obtain evidence from areas where they detected something,” Williams said.

Police found bones during their search of the property, but Williams said the remains would have to be sent to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences to determine if they were from a human.

I'm guessing the bones turned out not to be human, because they were found almost a year ago and I searched and searched but could not find any followup in the news, no UID matching the date and location in NamUs, nothing about further charges against the man named in the article, and no obit for Corey Smith.

Could not find Corey on NamUs, but he is on the list of missing persons on the Walker County sheriff's website:

It is sad that this young man an many more after him have gone missing around the same area an NO one thinks it’s suspicious !

Living in the area myself, the police and officials aren't going to bend over backwards for missing persons. They usually spend most resources on drugs in the area and "money" matters of that type. Younger people (15-25) go missing around this area quite common and they are usually treated as "leaving the area under their own power"

Details of Disappearance
Smith was last seen in Jasper, Alabama on June 18, 2009. He stopped to see his uncle that day and said he was going to go to the home of a man who owed him money, in order to straighten the matter out.
Smith has never been heard from again.

He lived in the 100 block of Drummond Switch Cut-Off Road in Empire, Alabama at the time of his disappearance. He left behind two children, and his girlfriend gave birth to his third child shortly after he vanished.

Few details are available in his case, but foul play is suspected.
