Police say a man stabbed four people at a Catholic church in Albuquerque as a Sunday mass was nearing its end.

Police spokesman Robert Gibbs says a man in his 20s jumped over several pews at St. Jude Thaddeus Catholic Church around noon Sunday and walked up to the choir area where he began his attack.
---
Gibbs says the attacker is in custody but that police don't yet know his identity, the motive for the stabbings, whether he had any ties to the victims or whether he regularly attended the church.

How awful. Those poor people. One would think of church as a safe haven, but I guess not any longer.

Oh hold on. They ID'd this guy. His mom is a Eucharistic Minister at the Church. I'll get a link.

SMH. Mental illness involved in this one maybe?

Lawrence Capener, 26, who shocked the congregation of St. Jude Thaddeus Catholic Church in 2013 when he jumped over pews and stabbed the choir director and several parishioners during a service, entered an Alford plea to four felonies including attempted murder.

He was immediately sentenced to five years in prison, as called for in the plea agreement, plus five years of supervised probation...

Capener said he believed the choir director was involved in a conspiracy of Masons and the devil was piping messages through the church’s audio system, according to previous police statements.
