House yields woman's remains
Discovery made after city case linked to B.C. homicide

She was last seen out for a stroll in downtown Winnipeg in 2006.

Family and friends have spent more than six years wondering whether Myrna Letandre would ever walk back into their lives.

Those hopes were dashed this week with a stunning discovery inside a Point Douglas rooming house that has brought a mixture of grief and relief to those closest to her.

Police said Friday human remains found at 97 Lorne Ave. Thursday have been identified as Letandre, who was 37 years old when she was reported missing in the fall of 2006.

"For the family, now we can place her to rest. Appropriate rest," a solemn Barry Anderson told the Free Press.

He said it came as a shock to hear the mystery surrounding his cousin had been solved. "We're just trying to get as much information now as we can," he said.

Another cousin, Sidney Letandre, said he always figured the cousin he grew up with and treated like a sister didn't disappear on purpose.

"It's bittersweet. At least now we know we can take her home and let her rest," Letandre said.

RCMP and Winnipeg police teamed up to form the Project Devote task force in 2009 and have identified 20 homicides and eight missing-persons cases linked by one factor -- the individuals had all a high risk of becoming victims of violent crime. Letandre was one of those eight missing persons.

This is the first of those 28 Devote cases to be resolved.

A man accused of killing Myrna Letandre who went missing in 2006 started laughing in front of her family as he tried to plead guilty.

Traigo Andretti is charged with 2nd degree murder and this marks the second time he’s tried to admit to the killing. However, the judge has repeatedly urged him to re-consider and get himself a lawyer.

Andretti, who is already serving a life sentence for killing his wife in British Colombia, is scheduled to formally enter his plea of guilty in September.

“This is serious business,” Preston told Andretti. “I know you are laughing and I’m not sure why. I’m saying you should speak to a lawyer. And if you don’t, that’s your choice.”

Letandre’s remains were found in a Lorne Avenue home in May of last year. Police arrested Andretti last month and charged him with second-degree murder.

In April, Andretti pleaded guilty to killing and dismembering Jennifer McPherson, a former Winnipegger, in British Columbia in 2013. McPherson’s remains were found on May 2, 2013, on Hanson Island, B.C., where she and Andretti worked together.

Police say Andretti, who also goes by the name Dylan Harold Grubb, had contact with Letandre while they were living in Winnipeg. One source described it as an informal relationship.

RCMP previously stated they believe Letandre may have briefly lived at the Lorne Avenue home where her remains were found, although they wouldn’t disclose whether it was with Andretti.

Andretti, who has a form of autism, had previously raised concerns to police and justice officials because he often failed to take his prescription medication. However, no request has been made for any type of psychiatric assessment, despite some unusual behaviour which includes smiling and laughing Monday when he attempted to plead guilty.

Sept 10 is the day for pleaing......one wonders which part of the autism spectrum he inhabits. He may have other mental health issues too if he's supposed to be taking medication. I wonder if he's an Aspie?

"Andretti has a form of autism and has been of concern to police when he failed to take his medication. He has a criminal history in Manitoba and B.C., including a violent attack against McPherson in 2008.''

Traigo Andretti has pleaded not guilty in the death of Myrna Letandre in 2006 and is at this point heading to trial without a lawyer. Andretti is already serving a life sentence for killing and dismembering his wife in British Columbia.

The 38-year-old has tried to plead guilty three times before various judges in Manitoba, but he was rejected because it wasn’t before the proper level of court. But when he was formally given the chance to enter a plea on Monday, Andretti pleaded not guilty...

His pre-trial hearing is set for Oct. 30.

The Regional Psychiatric Centre in Saskatoon issued a statement saying Traigo Ehkid Andretti was found unresponsive in his cell on Saturday and could not be revived...

Andretti, 40, was convicted of first degree murder in 2014 for the death of his wife Jennifer McPherson...

Andretti was subsequently charged with second degree murder in the 2006 slaying of Myrna Letandre in Manitoba, for which he later plead guilty.
