    CLEARLAKE, Calif. —

Despite an intensified effort on the third day of widespread searching, on Tuesday there was still no sign of the autistic girl from San Francisco who went missing on Mother's Day in Clearlake.

    snipped

Speaking on behalf of Mikaela's parents, the little girl's godfather Mike Dowling described Mikaela as a loving child with an ever-present smile.

He said the San Francisco family came to their Clearlake vacation home for the weekend. Mikaela disappeared around 1:30 p.m. Sunday.

She is autistic and can't speak.

Dowling issed a plea for people who live in the Clearlake area.

"Search your house. Search your backyard," said Dowling. "She likes finding tight little places, comfortable spaces."

Which way was she running towards when she went by the house with the surveillance camera? I know they said she was running North, but I can't figure out. Towards the end of the street? Or was it going back towards "Highlands Harbor Road"?
I am nearly 100% certain she was running to the left/west northwest I guess might be the best description. Where she went missing from, if you look at it, would be a dead end sort of street by the looks of it off to the right, ending in more water. Going to the left is the only way it would be "up the street" and NOT towards water, so it's got to be that way.

Regardless of the time stamp we know the mother was 2 minutes behind the child, s earching hard for her from the moment she went missing.

LE says mother called around 1:30. I do not know for certain if hse searched an entire two hours before calling the police or not but I'm relatively certain that was not hte case. Judging from what they say about her, she is very low functioning and definitely Autistic just like the kids I work with everyday.
I worked in group homes several years ago, as well. Is it possible that the seizures could be from a separate medical issue as well? IOW, they are not caused by the autism, they're another underlying condition. I remember one young teenage girl who was profoundly mentally disabled and non-verbal, who also had seizures. She began having multiple seizures and was hospitalized and died a few days later.

Many children who are mentally impaired also have seizures, in fact, it was fairly common with most of the ones I worked around. I mentioned recently that I have a great-nephew who is autistic, I would say higher functioning than this child is described, but I don't know if he has seizures or not, I do not see him very often.

I think the tweet being referred to is the one where someone mentions their child being in "Kinder" with Mikaela's brother. I believe someone here is inferring from that tweet that Mikaela's brother must have been around age 6, because the word "kinder" sounds like "kindergarten" and US children usually attend Kindergarten around age 6. [ETA: Not that this is incorrect - KinderCare programs are ages 4-6 approx I believe]

So the overall implication would seem to be that the brother was too young to be "responsible" for watching Mikaela, which amounts to the same drivel, filth, and insulting garbage that Chelsea Hoffman/The Examiner prints up, which is worse than tabloid nonsense and has no place in any "investigation".

Also I hate going here but LE should check RSO's just in case.

Yes, I agree. If you put it in satellite view then go to street view, you're looking right at the same roofline as the one captured in the video of Mikaela. Which means I was correct about the direction she was running - left/westish/away from the "dead end" looking part of her road where there's water on 3 sides. This is good news IMHO.

I want to be there myself searching in person. This case is taking over my entire being. I may put on her local scanner for awhile and see if anything turns up since I can't do anything else of use from the other side of the country.

    Thank you hollye!

Sadly, we do not have Mikaela safely found yet so when you are around and see this could you please add the CCTV house, as linked not too far before this post of mine? I'm almost 100% sure it's correct, and it does definitely help lay out a trail for her. [15124 Harbor Lane]

If she passed this house then she really may have ended up by the Head Start, crying, like someone heard the first night.

And looking at the map all I can focus on is that if she kept running along the side of the road until she got to the head start, that's precisely when it would've stopped being buildings on both sides of the road and would've turned into woods on one side instead.

I SO SO SO hope those woods are searched THOROUGHLY ASAP if they haven't been yet!

Until hollye gets here, I just threw together a quick and non-comprehensive additional map for this case, simply to show the route from her house to the cctv footage house to the head start where someone heard crying the first night. This is to show everyone here the route, and to illustrate where the woods are that i'm talking about. I guess I'm hoping someone will be able to check this route personally and make me feel better as silly as that sounds. It's so hard to be so far away and unable to help.

    http://goo.gl/maps/oAPVL

It would be less than a half mile distance for her to travel.

There are two RSO's on the end of Meadowbrook.

edit I added them to the map I posted of my own.

I am NOT making accusations here. I am simply noting because it concerns me..... one of the RSO's owns a business near where someone heard a child crying the first night. Merely an observation, and not one that we can probably research or discuss at this time. But I feel it would be negligent to just ignore that fact.

I could not sleep last night thinking of this poor little one. I thought of RSo's etc and also remembered my grandson hated water. He suffered from autism but not to the point of this child. Keeping my fingers crossed she hates water to.

For those familiar with children with autism, is there any chance that she could have tried heading home to their house in SF? I know it hasn't been said, but if she has a photographic memory and was paying attention to the path they took to get to the lake house, maybe she could be heading along the roads they took to get there. I would imagine though that if that were the case, she would have been seen by now.

In any event, I put the location of where they possibly live, just in case.

The examiner has a new article up. I spare you the mean dribble about the parents, but she makes one good search suggestion:

A person speaking for the parents (who have so far not spoken to the public or made any public pleas themselves) is encouraging people to not only check every nook and cranny of their properties, but to do so repeatedly until the child is found. Mikaela Lynch may be frightened or disoriented (if she's still even alive after four days), and may return to comforting places where she's hidden while missing. This means if you've checked your doghouse, boat and outbuildings once, the family reportedly wants you to check again, and then check again.

Quite unlikely IMHO. The convulsant drugs may have worn off by now, so she could be feeling a little poorly. I believe she is tucked up somewhere trying to keep warm.

Also depends on how long the journey is as there is only so much she can remember

"Her disappearance is not considered an abduction, and police have not received any tips about her, Bennett said.

The one-mile search area where the girl was last seen includes a creek near the house, marshlands, backyards and empty homes, Bennett said. "

Poor girl, I don't have much hope. She has the mental capacity like a 1 y/o, that basically translates into zero survival skills on her own. And after three days without food, water and medications, it's a bleak outlook. I hope very much that I'm wrong, but at this point it needs a miracle imo. Sorry to be pessimistic, but the reality does not look good.

Good morning WSers. I wish I could head back out to Clearlake today, but it's just not possible with my work schedule. I *may* be able to go tomorrow if (ugh) she's still missing and they are requesting searchers again.

I have to tell you what it's like searching though. It's really opened my eyes to the process and how *hard* it is for a non-LE person to really accomplish much.

So here you are, a wide eyed helpful searcher. You're given a place to go and instructions. In this case, we are told that if the child isn't in the water (which, obviously is being left to the pros to search THAT) then she is hiding, as she likes to hide in unusual small places. So we're given a stack of flyers and told to canvas the neighborhood asking people to search small places.

Okay. So you walk around with your flyers and you catch a neighbor checking their mail. You run up to them all full of goodwill and helpfulness, showing them the flyer, explaining what you were told. Well...of COURSE they already know about the case and of course they have already searched their yard. And it's not like they're gonna let you in their backyard to search! So you move on.

You pass dozens of empty houses. You can clearly see small buildings, boats, etc in backyards. There is NOTHING you can do. You can't trespass onto private property. They have told you that she will NOT respond to her name being called so you can't call for her. So you keep walking and peering and hoping to catch a glimpse of...something. After about 20 houses, the sun is beating down on you, it's hot, anyone you've passed already clearly knows about the girl, the streets are teeming with volunteers, news vans, LE. So you move onto the marshlands and lake. You're confronted with acres of marshland that are four to five feet high with foliage. It's uneven, buggy with sharp plants that are difficult to avoid bumping into and really hurt. It's impossible to really "see" much other than what's directly in front of you. The creek bed at least has some visibility but it's really murky and buggy and hard to navigate through the dense branches draped all over.

The lake shore was at least straight forward. Either you saw something or you didn't! I think that was my most satisfying part of the search, maybe because I could actually KNOW that she wasn't there.

Then say you know of where an RSO lives. Now you're standing in front of his (presumably) house. What are you going to do? You can't question him, you're not LE. You can't search his yard. It could be dangerous. There really isn't anything you can do other than what you've done everywhere else---peer into the yard to try see if you spot anything.

And LE may be very gracious and friendly with the volunteers but they aren't interested in getting strategy or tips from them. You're basically there to search for what they tell you to search for, period. I did mention the garbage trucks as soon as I walked into the building. They said they would "note" it. I don't know what that means, but it was clear that was the end of it. I have to admit I felt a little frustrated about that, but I understood that they weren't asking for my thoughts on the case, they wanted warm bodies and sets of eyes to search. They also specifically asked us not to disturb or collect anything, to leave it to LE.

So searching isn't as productive as it sounds like it would be. If she was hiding in a preschool, they've been open and in session for three days now. I'm thinking that they would have noticed her if she was in the building. I don't know that the school wasn't part of the searches yesterday, it very well could have been. Their map was pretty extensive and if it was within the one mile radius, then I'm sure it was searched.

I have to tell you guys--it's a really frustrating experience as you feel like your hands are really tied as to what you can actually search. And I'm sure LE experiences the same to a lesser extent when it comes to private property.

Having said all of that though, the search and rescue people were SO open and supportive about letting people search pretty much what ever public property they wanted to. They just wanted you to tell them so that they could mark it on the map. I heard people coming in offering to use their water craft and other equipment to get into the harder to reach marshes and they were greeted with enthusiasm and gratitude.

Come out come out where ever you are Mikaela.

I read this thread and think "can't we get a win? Just once? Some miracle?" I hope so. Sfbaynancydrew mentioned that private property cannot be searched by the public. Since this is an area with "vacation homes" -- do we know if LE has been searching private property- at least the exterior yards/sheds that might be open and accessible? I hope so. If I were her mom, LE would have to lock me up to keep me off the property of my neighbors if I thought my girl was hiding there.
