NY - Woodbury, AsianFem skeletal, >50, in woods, May'13 - Pan Sun Kim

WOODBURY - A medical examiner believes that human remains found in Woodbury last week may have been there years longer than originally believed.
A human skull and other bones were found Friday about 100 feet into the woods off of Route 32. Police say two men walking home from work at the Woodbury Common Premium Outlets found the remains. Officials also found some unique personal items near the body.

Investigators say the remains, which they believe to be a female 25 to 30 years old, do not match any missing persons in the area.

WOODBURY - Police are hoping dental records and personal items will help them identify human remains found in Woodbury last week.

The remains, found by two men near the Woodbury Common Premium Outlets, are believed to be female. Investigators say they found female clothing, a purse and jewelry near the remains last Friday.

On Saturday, authorities found more bones believed to be from the same woman not far from where the first set of remains were found. Police say the remains and belongings match those of a woman who is 25 to 30 years old.

I wonder if this is another Craigs List victim. Only 20 miles from Jones Beach.

It's not terribly far away from Brooklyn or New York City, either. Or Long Island, for that matter

Stevie Bates, 19, went missing "about a year ago" from the Port Authority in Manhattan.
    Her jewelry is listed: http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/b/bates_stevie.html
Also, note, she is not 6'1" that Charley Project states.

'Gold necklace w/round jade pendant, gold ring on right hand'

Jade is not opal, but they're often confused.

    That necklace is so pretty!

This probably wasn't a robbery gone wrong, I wonder what happened?

The article stated that the body could have been left for dead up to 5 years ago. I wonder then, if these are synthetic opals in the necklace and ring, not only because it has that particular look in the opal cabochons, but if it were a natural opal, I would think it would have had a chance to craze or crack being left out in the elements. Because opals are susceptible to heat/ cold changes, it can craze.
If it is a natural opal, say a doublet, then I am not sure because the quartz top can protect it.
Usually, an opal ring is not worn on a daily basis, as if a person washes their hands, it can crack from the water change, or if you knock your ring on something by chance, the opal can crack.
So,if it is a natural opal, maybe this UID has not been there that long, and if it is a synthetic opal, it is possible that opal can withstand the elements better, so this UID could have been there for years.

That sure looks like a match on all 3 pieces of jewelry that Pan Sum Kim is wearing in that photo.

Authorities say 78-year-old Pan Sun Kim's family came forward when they recognized photos of jewelry and glasses from the scene in an article in the Korea Times. They also reportedly confirmed that over-the-counter Korean medication found near the remains also belonged to Kim.
