    MI - Cullen Finnerty, 30, Baldwin, 26 May 2013

Former GVSU Quarterback Missing In Lake County

A search is underway near Baldwin for former GVSU Lakers quarterback Cullen Finnerty. Finnerty was fishing on a pontoon boat near Baldwin yesterday.

    [snip]

Finnerty was having what the family described as an episode and say he was scared and wandered into the woods.

    [snip]

His family says he suffered several concussions in his career and are concerned that it may triggered this episode.

There has been a lot of talk in recent years about the effects of concussions on football players and other athletes. Multiple concussions have been identified as possible causes of all sorts of bad things. Most notably, athletes have become depressed and suicidal and, in some instances, violent. Doctors also have reported symptoms characteristic of Alzheimer's in patients who have had multiple concussions. The symptoms of concussions include dementia, confusion, dizziness, memory lapses and anxiety.

What's interesting to me is that he was able to call some family members. That indicates that he was somewhat coherent.

There is a comment after the story. Who knows whether it has merit.

Exactly. It was found to have been the cause of Junior Sau's death. http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/...-kil/?page=all
Not suggesting that this is what has happened to Cullen, but it does give pause for thought imo.

I hope Cullen is found safe and sound.

Unfortunately young adulthood is the most common time for the onset of schizophrenia. Where ever he is, hope he is found safe, and soon!

I think the chance that he has concussion-induced psychological problems is probably greater than the chance that he has schizophrenia. The former is commonplace among individuals who have had multiple concussions. The latter happens to only 1 in about 100.

There's a massive lawsuit going on right now isn't there? I know I've heard of a couple of players who died and wanted their brains donated to research.

    Has the comment gone?

Do any of the articles state whether Cullen was fishing alone or with friends? I know he was on the phone with his wife, but did anyone witness him running into the woods? He reportedly said he was afraid, and none of the articles state that he has a problem with paranoia or after effects of a brain injury. Could he have been running from an actual threat? Could someone have been out there with him?

I wish the articles would be more specific about his history and the circumstances surrounding his disappearance.
