STOCKTON, Calif. (AP) — Authorities investigating a deadly weekend SUV crash in a waterway in Northern California are being hampered by an uncooperative 911 caller and conflicting accounts from family members, a California Highway Patrol officer said on Thursday.

Investigators believe they have now recovered the bodies of all five crash victims from the slough west of Stockton after two men were pulled out on Wednesday, Officer James Smith said. The men have not been identified, but authorities have identified the other victims as 28-year-old Rafael Ontiveros of Redwood City, 40-year-old Adrian Pena of Santa Rosa, and Luis Cuevas, whose age and hometown weren't available..............more...........

Terrible! I wonder if they were doing something illegal and that's why the 911 caller and others are being uncooperative. And, no one was found inside the vehicle. So, they were able to get out of the SUV, but drowned? In any case, it's very tragic. RIP.

Got a little more info from the Stockton news but it just raises more questions. Maybe the 5 were not wearing seatbelts and were thrown out of the car and could not swim?

Emergency personnel responded to a call about 10:30 a.m. Sunday from a man who said he had escaped from a car that went into the river. He said he thought there were five more passengers.

The caller said the car went into the Delta about 5:30 a.m. He said the driver lost control of the vehicle, sending it down a levee and into the water. He said the group was going fishing.

The caller said he was able to get out, but he did not wait around for authorities, nor did he explain why he had waited so long to call for help.
