This accident on the I-35 exit ramp at 290 involved 18 cars.

Officials blamed icy conditions for more than four hundred wrecks in Austin alone.
"They were still trying to add up the numbers,” Mike Frick, battalion chief with Austin Fire Department, said. “It was substantial. They were estimating between two and three times the normal call volume."

I guess those people down south don't know how to drive in the ice and snow...

They showed a few accidents while they were happening, on TV, and it was drivers standing on their brakes, rather than steering the car away from the accident, that caused the accidents. If you grow up with snow & ice, you never forget how to drive in it.

Well, I'm here in Austin but I didn't even notice that much ice. I did read about it in the paper. They don't know how to drive at all here in ice or snow.

wow--- i grew up in it--- but its been 8 years-- i hope it would come back to me..gives me shivers even thinking about it!

My car was glazed over, but the sidewalk and driveway were fine. My kids were really hoping to grab some cookie sheets and go sledding, but it was just enough ice on the bridges and overpasses (and some areas on the streets) to cause a mess. Nope, we don't do well driving on ice.....we rarely get snow, usually ice.

Ice is a very rare occurance & we have miles and miles of overpasses and bridges and road crews can be too slow to get out sand and gravel. You would be hard pressed to even find snow tires or chains here. Not enough accumulation to make them very effective anyway.

lmao..your right actually! I lived in Texas for 7 years (45 mins from Austin) as soon as a cool chill hits the air the local Home Depots and Lowes runs out of portable heaters and such its soooo funny to watch these people. You go into any resturant in the area and alls people are talking about is did you hear? Tomorrow night we are gonna get some really bad weather''...it's hilarious.

When it starts snowing here, people start looking for cars to hit. Beats all I ever seen.

lol that's funny about the heaters. It's almost as bad as around here when people hear the word snow grocery stores are automatically completely out of milk and bread. It's not like it was back in the day when you were completely snowed in for a few days lol.

Possible blizzard and extremely high wind warnings

http://www.crh.noaa.gov/ifps/MapClick.php?CityName=Bethune&state=CO&site=GLD

I will need to make sure to "batten down the hatches" tonight with the livestock. One mare is ready to foal any day. They usually do it during low pressure storms. She'll go to the barn this evening. The calves we are bottle feeding are in there now. It gets pretty nasty out here with these high winds. It's well known that I70 gets closed down during blizzards and dust storms.

We drove home yesterday from Denver and could see a massive dust storm near home. Fortunately, by the time we arrived the wind had just died down and the dirt quit blowing.

Everyone in the affected areas, please take care of the weather.

Just got this from a local weatherman:

Subject: Fwd: Read this from Garrett Lewis
>> This is from the Channel 5 weather guy...........
>> Garrett Lewis is the Channel 5 Meteorologist in Ft Smith, AR
>>
>> Hi Family -
>> You can forward this to a few close friends and other family
>> members if you'd like. I would make plans to get to a safe room
>> or tornado shelter on Thursday night. The parameters I'm looking
>> at are incredible and some of the highest I've seen in quite
>> sometime.
>>
>> A large outbreak of tornadoes is likely across Kansas, Oklahoma,
>> Missouri, Nebraska, and eventually our area in West Central
>> Arkansas after sunset.
Gather important documents and prepare to
>> move to a safe place when a tornado warning is issued. The last
>> storm system which prompted tornado warnings had a very slight
>> chance of putting down a funnel. Any storms which develop on
>> Thursday will have a very HIGH tornado threat.
A lot can change
>> between then and now, but just to be on the safe side I would make
>> a plan of action now.

PUBLIC SEVERE WEATHER OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1137 AM CDT WED MAY 10 2006

...SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS EXPECTED OVER PARTS OF THE LOWER MISSISSIPPI RIVER VALLEY AND MID SOUTH THIS AFTERNOON AND TONIGHT...

THE NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER IN NORMAN OK IS FORECASTING THE
DEVELOPMENT OF WIDESPREAD SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS INCLUDING A FEW
STRONG AND DAMAGING TORNADOES OVER PARTS OF THE LOWER MISSISSIPPI
RIVER VALLEY AND MID SOUTH THIS AFTERNOON AND TONIGHT.

THE AREAS MOST LIKELY TO EXPERIENCE THIS ACTIVITY INCLUDE

MUCH OF ALABAMA
FAR SOUTHEASTERN ARKANSAS
NORTHEASTERN LOUISIANA
MUCH OF MISSISSIPPI

SURROUNDING THE MODERATE RISK AREA...THERE IS A SLIGHT RISK OF
SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS FROM THE TEXAS COAST EASTWARD ACROSS THE GULF COAST AND NORTHWARD INTO THE OHIO VALLEY AND SOUTHERN GREAT LAKES REGIONS.

A RATHER VOLATILE SITUATION APPEARS TO BE TAKING SHAPE OVER MUCH THE
LOWER MISSISSIPPI VALLEY THIS AFTERNOON WITH CONDITIONS BECOMING
FAVORABLE FOR A SIGNIFICANT SEVERE THUNDERSTORM EPISODE. A BROAD
TROUGH ALOFT WILL SPREAD VERY STRONG WESTERLY MID LEVEL WINDS ACROSS THE REGION. MEANWHILE AT THE SURFACE...A COLD FRONT WILL ADVANCE SOUTHEASTWARD INTO THE LOWER OHIO...LOWER MISSISSIPPI AND TENNESSEE RIVER VALLEYS THROUGH TONIGHT.

ONGOING THUNDERSTORMS THIS MORNING OVER PORTIONS OF THE LOWER
MISSISSIPPI AND TENNESSEE VALLEYS HAVE PRODUCED A COOLER AIR MASS IN THEIR WAKE ACROSS MOST OF EASTERN ARKANSAS...NORTHERN MISSISSIPPI AND NORTHERN AND CENTRAL ALABAMA. HOWEVER ABUNDANT GULF MOISTURE IS IN PLACE JUST UPSTREAM ACROSS LOUISIANA AND SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI. THE PRESENCE OF THIS MOISTURE WILL SUPPORT VERY STRONG INSTABILITY AHEAD OF AN APPROACHING UPPER TROUGH AND SURFACE COLD FRONT...AND IT IS EXPECTED THAT ADDITIONAL RAPID SEVERE THUNDERSTORM DEVELOPMENT WILL OCCUR ACROSS MUCH OF THE LOWER MISSISSIPPI VALLEY AND PORTIONS OF THE MID SOUTH DURING THE AFTERNOON. STORMS WILL BECOME SUPERCELLS WITH AN ENHANCED THREAT OF TORNADOES AND VERY LARGE DAMAGING HAIL. THE TORNADO THREAT SHOULD BE GREATEST NEAR RESIDUAL SURFACE BOUNDARIES LEFT OVER FROM THE MORNING STORMS WITH CONDITIONS MOST FAVORABLE FOR A FEW STRONG AND DAMAGING TORNADOES LATER THIS AFTERNOON AND THIS EVENING. THE SEVERE THUNDERSTORM ACTIVITY WILL LIKELY EVOLVE INTO ONE OR MORE LARGE CLUSTERS THROUGH THE EVENING WITH THE SEVERE THREAT GRADUALLY TRANSITIONING TO PRIMARILY LARGE HAIL AND DAMAGING WINDS OVERNIGHT.

THOSE IN THE THREATENED AREA ARE URGED TO REVIEW SEVERE WEATHER
SAFETY RULES AND TO LISTEN TO RADIO...TELEVISION...AND NOAA WEATHER
RADIO FOR POSSIBLE WATCHES...WARNINGS...AND STATEMENTS LATER TODAY.
