'Unpredictable' storm in Oklahoma turned on three chasers

(CNN) -- A group of men who devoted their lives to hunting powerful storms died in the middle of the chase.

Tim Samaras, his son Paul Samaras and Carl Young were killed Friday while following a tornado in El Reno, Oklahoma, relatives told CNN on Sunday. Their work tracking tornadoes was featured on the former Discovery Channel show "Storm Chasers."

They were among at least nine people that state officials reported killed in storms that struck Oklahoma on Friday night. On Sunday, Oklahoma City Fire Department officials told CNN that searchers had found the bodies of as many as five additional victims, but state officials could not be immediately reached to confirm whether the statewide death toll had increased.

Emergency porta-potty
First aid kit
Important documents stored in safe place (such as bank safety deposit box)
Copies of important documents stored in safe room
Phone weather alerts
Several days' worth of needed medications
List of important phone numbers (might not be able to rely on retrieving them from phone)

ETA: Oh yes! Something that has really been driven home in the Moore storm: Make sure your pet has an identification tag! Even if they are chipped, an ID tag can save so much time. And if they are chipped, make sure you keep up your registration with the chip service. Mine is through Home Again:

Sturdy, protective footwear

Rain gear (the tornado may be gone but the rain still there, and there will be a need to get out and assess damage or get to a safer place)

Keep gas tank at least half-way full at all times to avoid being stranded


Oh! Make sure tetanus shot boosters are up-to-date!

You got that right. Maybe need some battery operated video games for the kiddies too.

I'd be the kind of person to be well stocked up on can food and forget the electric can opener doesn't work when the power is out.
 
Now that the old weather thread has been locked, guess I'd best move my porta-potty over to this one. If anyone needs to use it during a storm, it's behind the curtain
